Not so, BMWeber...

I'd say I'm socially liberal and very fiscally conservative. I'm a registered Republican and proud to be one.

No worries. He might be McCain's running mate if JC can put his bitterness aside.

I am now looking forward to 2012 as I think that with his conservative credentials solidified, he would be the front runner.

That said, if McCain picked Romney as his running-mate, I would be much more positive on the race than I would be without Romney. Still, there are now rumblings that McCain may choose Lieberman as a running-mate and, while I am a big fan of Lieberman personally, that would really crumble the Republican party.

I realize you were half-joking, but I'm registered as an independent too.

Voted for Bush in 2000. I backed (and still back) the REAL war against the terrorists who hit us on 9/11 -- the one in Afghanistan.

It's not my fault that none of the other candidates have a plan to win against the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11 in Afghanistan like Obama has:

"Afghanistan: Barack Obama believes that we need to begin to end the war [in Iraq] in order to finish the fight in Afghanistan. He would redeploy at least two combat brigades (7,000 personnel) of rested, trained American troops to Afghanistan to reinforce our counter-terrorism operations and support NATO’s efforts to fight the Taliban."

http://www.barackobama.com/issues/pdf/IraqFactSheet.pdf

Bring me a better Republican, and I'll vote for them. But, it is Barack Obama who right now most closely matches my priorities on the issues I care about most.

BMWeber, even our strongly Pro (Republican) Mitt Romney supporter, MPower, shows his independent mindedness with his comments about (Democrat) (Independent?) Joe Lieberman:

I think a better word than "Liberal" to describe most of us on this board, would be "open-minded". :iono:

BMWeber didn't say the forum was full of Democrats, he said it was full of liberals, a comment with which I tend to agree.

You gently protested by saying you were Independent, but what exactly does this mean? Your previous posts defend uber-liberals and you've already said an Obama or Clinton presidency is a foregone conclusion, so I am inclined to believe you lean left.

In this regard, at least in the US, you're either liberal, conservative, or I suppose libertarian, the latter of which could go either way.

Those proclaiming to be fiscally conservative and socially liberal are being non-sensical. It's an oxymoron. How can you limit Government and spending if you support big entitlements such as Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, and welfare? By the way, these dwarf the defense budget many times over.

SR08NOVA -- Why the need to label people?

Your tactic in your last post was to label people with names, so that you can assign stuff on people that they might or might not actually believe. Nobody has said anything about Social Security or Medicare/Medicaid. You have no right to assume what any of our positions are on Social Security or Medicare/Medicaid just because of some label you want to put on us.

You talk like people are a bunch of sheep that all get herded into "either liberal, conservative, or I suppose libertarian" pens, and everyone must be exactly the same in each pen you herd them into with your labels.

I reject that completely, as I expect most others on the board do too.

Label wars remind me of tuner wars. Just say no!

Ugh.

+1

BTW, question for Democrat voters (or, likely Democrat voters):

Would a McCain/Lieberman ticket tempt you away from a vote for Obama or Clinton? I think that if the answer for most Democrats to this question is "yes" then McCain might seriously considering going in that direction. Of course, I would much rather see him find a traditional conservative to gain the confidence of conservative voters.

No way MPower. There is currently nobody on the Republican side that is going to sway me from an Obama/Clinton ticket. IMHO, we do not need another Republican ran whitehouse. When I say I want change I mean change of party.

I voted against Gore/Lieberman in 2000. I wouldn't be any more tempted to vote McCain/Lieberman now.

I will never vote for Clinton. Ever. Under any circumstances.

I'm an Obama supporter, but I've always liked McCain. I don't think I'd vote for him over Obama, he just brings too much new to the political scene that McCain can't

BTW, the spending numbers I posted were "net" spending, which according to the Tax Payers Union include "projected" returns from programs like healthcare.

And as far as spending out the nose while in debt goes, WWII was a bit different from out current situation.

As far as traditional Conservatives go, the only prominent one I can thing of is Ron Paul. There is nothing "conservative" about the neo-con big spending, big government, anti-civil liberties movement, and really, if you look at Romeny, he doesn't even fit the bill there. The Health Care plan he implemented in Mass. is MARKEDLY similar to the one Clinton has that all the "conservatives" are now bashing as Socialized Healthcare.

Well, this goes into a whole other bag of worms but I doubt that Gore or Kerry would have been a whole hell of a lot better.

Yep. Whole 'nuther can of worms. Maybe better to hash out some other time. Doesn't really have much to do with the election at hand.

Ditto.

Considered myself a right/moderate 2 years ago. Living in NW Oregon and seeing all the hashed-out hairy hippies over there made me lean to what I thought was the "conservative US common sense". The winters there drove me crazy though, and I had to move. Chose Utah, can't remember why now. After living in Mormon Land for over a year I've finally "seen the right". I can tell you that I don't care for it at all. (Never cared for the war though, for what it's worth)

I'm much more social/fiscally liberal now. It just makes more sense -to me at least.

-PS: Prediction: Obama wins 08' (wide margin)
