Kansas City Area Car Shows This Weekend

Three major car shows in the Kansas City Area this weekend, the Goodguys hot-rod show at the Kansas Speedway runs Friday thru Sunday. The All British show is up at the airport (MCI) on Sunday - and my favorite, the Kowtown Greaserama is Sunday at the Boulevard Drive-In. Here's the poster for this year's Greaserama:

Great poster Hugo, where's Greaserama? That is soooo cowtown (KC)- disparaging of its coolness.

Boulevard Drive-In on Merriam Lane KC, K - rough part of town. But my intention is to hit the all-brit meet at the airport around 1pm or so and then wander down to the Greaserama.

Give me a jingle if you want to meet up on either leg of it - I'm in the book, aren't too many Hugo Beckers floating around.

Here's a couple of vignettes of the All Brit and Greaserama.

Hugo, you and I went to different high schools together! We definitely share a lot of the same car background.

My first car was a 1953 Chevy Business Coupe, which eventually I rebuilt the motor with oversize aluminum hi-dome pistons, cam and triple carbs--it was one fast 6--too bad I wasn't savvy enough to replace the babbited bearing rods with GMC insert bearing versions.

Do you go to lunch every other Tuesday with McCluggage & friends, 'mikeo' - I can't remember what the name of the joint is - but I know there's a car crazy lunch in Santa Fe that Denise is involved with.

Jeez, is there ANYTHING in the car world you don't know about, Hugo?

Well, no, the bottom end was saved from that spectacular finish--I just couldn't stand the knocking anymore.

Yes, there is a Tuesday lunch at Santa Fe Bar 'n Grill that Denise is involved with--but alas, I seldom if ever make it. It's on my 'to-do' list but never seems to happen. I did sell a pair of runflats off our '02 MCS to Denise a few years back though. Nice person. How do you know her?

She's been to our breakfast a few times in the last couple of years. She's pals with one of the guys in the gang that's an auto journalist. You really just need to go - tell her when you show up that you're aware of her Kansas City, Age & Treachery connection and that you'll tell everybody about it if she tries to throw you out. Then ask her about the gnomes on the logs during one of her rally adventures in Europe. It's a good story!!

Actually I've been really, really lucky to get to see and do a lot of things that I probably should never have gotten close to. Age & Treachery Racing is a very loose organization (no officers, no dues, no membership committee - it's basically a gang of middle-age car guys) that has a core of people that are absolutely steeped in automotive knowledge. The other important thing about this group is that a lot of them still race (vintage) and there is no marque snobbery whatsoever.

On top of that these guys have contacts to a wide segment of the greater automotive world. I was talking to one of the guys in the group who shephards the KU Formula SAE team and one of their former students is now an up and coming star engineer in Forsythe Racing.

I just happen to be along for the ride and I'm enjoying every minute of it.

One thing about the rat rod crowd - they have a well defined sense of humor - witness the gold tooth in the buick below:
