RDSport M3 Software via OBD Port

Happy New Year to All!

Iím new on m3post.com and new to the BMW world, I picked up my first M3 after having owned only Porsches for the last 7 years. Not sure how crazy Iím going to go on modding my new beast, but I wanted to start with software.

After researching EMS options available for my M3 I decided to go with the RDSport tune. Thereís a couple of reasons why I went with these guys, one was the gains (Iíll list below) and two because they are the only company I could locate that could tune my E92 via the OBD Point. I really couldnít be bothered with sending my ECU somewhere as I use the car as my daily driver.

Gains:

Horse Power +24

Torque [Nm] +31

Speed [mp/h] 193.8

0-62 Mp/h [s] 4,7

I went to RDSports shop in Lake Forest, they read the ECU via the OBD Port which only took a couple of minutes, then they emailed the file to Racing Dynamics S.p.A in Italy to customize a file. About 30 minutes later they received the file back from Italy, they connected the laptop back up to my M3 then a couple of minutes later the job was done!

I can really feel the benefits of the software from RD and canít wait to find myself on a quite long straight road now my speed limiter is removed! The throttle response is a lot more responsive now and the car does really pull noticeably better than stock.

Overall I am extremely pleased results and the service I received and the best part of all is that they are currently having a New Years Sale so I only paid $1000 instead of the normal $1750 MSRP

There was another M3 at the shop with RDSports exhaust on, it sounded so good I think thatís my next purchase!

Wow!! Those are some pretty impressive gains. Are there any dyno charts available to verify those numbers??

People do one size fits all tunes all the time, they do generic maps based on a car is stock, or if it has XYZ mods, what octane it's running, etc. They build up a library based on cars they individually tune over time. Lots of Evo and STI tuners do mail order flashes. They tend to be a little more conservative than individual tunes, though.

The big question is if this software is detectable by your BMW service center. If so, there goes your warranty...

I am not really sure the BMW Service Centers know what they are doing. Last week I brought a 4.6 liter stroker to check out and issue with the DCT, and they kept the car for 2 days without sorting out the DCT issue but never even detected it was a modified motor. In absence of a failure I believe they jsut plug the car into the DIS and, if it tells them that the software requires an upgrade, they just flash it.

Clearly, if you experience an engine failure, you would be better off reflashing the car back to stock, and this is better accomplished through the OBD-II port than by sending back the ECU to whoever did the work in the first place.

Re-flash

OBD-II Re-flash: unlimited
BDM Re-flash: 3 FOC - $ 50 each thereafter, but if you get to that point it means you have a problem.

As far as I am concerned, all tuners should unconditionally reflash ECUs for their customers for as long as they own the car. Customer pays shipping.

Done.

EDIT: (whoops cross post!!!)

Good stuff RD! Please fill me in on how a customer can OBD flash and whether you have dealers in the Philly area.

Thanks
