I got my Imola Red 2001 E46 in the fall of 2000 and kept it for six years and 200,000 kilometers. The car was a blast and I routinely got thumbs up from kids from 6 to 60. My Space Grey E92 DCT is oh so stealthy and refined by comparison. Which is okay, because traffic enforcement is much tougher now. In regular use I get 22 mpg with the E92, got 24 mpg with the E46.

I miss how the center dash faces you. I also miss how the M logo would light up on the tach/speedometer (forgot which one). Lastly, I prefer the 'yellow' light gauges over the current white.

Did I mention how much I hate how the speedometer is unsymmetrical?

Last year I went from a '05 M3 to a '04 996 GT3 which is one of the all-time greatest "driver's car" according to many auto pundits. Well, I ended up missing my E46 M3 so much that I started hating my GT3!! Imagine that! For a "raw" car there isn't much better than the GT3 but the E46 M3 was along the same lines but much more practical and safe to drive in our everyday world. I still have not been able to commit to the E92 M3 because of it's esthetics in all aspects...it just doesn't get me too excited like the E46 did and still does. In fact, I check the local auto market regularly looking for a pristine, low milage E46 M3 to add back to the stable.

Had a 08 E92 M3 on order. Wasn't 100% satisfied as it was a bit lethargic in terms of driving feel/feedback, although it hides the heft well. Drove the 08 Z4 M. Very satisfied and far more fun! With the savings, bought a 03 M3 Cabrio with only 5,900 miles on it for daily driver duties. Two M cars for almost the price of one E92 M3...very happy!!!

My colors are in the sig. I ordered the Z4 M new so it's the colors I picked. The M3 was too good to pass on as it's essentially new yet 7 years old. It still has under 8,000 miles on it. I like silver but would have preferred a black interior (with silver). I can't complain though, the interior is as 99% new. In fact the seats were protected by sheep skin covers (removed but I still have) so underneath it's as if no human has ever touched them. The car brings me huge smiles every time I look at it, drive it. Sure it's been bettered by the E92 M3, but I like it more as it's more pure, less complicated, cooler, and the sound is amazing top down. When I get back from Afghanistan next year, I'm getting the ESS ecu and SMG software to give it a bit more driving refinement. Will probably get KW V3 coilovers too to give a better ride quality and a bit better and flatter cornering. Then I'm done! BTW, the Z4 M is the best BMW I've ever driven in terms of agility, braking, and high speed stability. Stock Continentals are its only negative.

The Differences...

I've had the pleasure to own both a Competition Package 2006 e46 and a 2009 e92 M3. The e46 was a memorable drive - the tighter steering without the electronic interface remains the key "miss" element, and the car felt more than 7% lighter than the newer model. The go kart description for a e46 competition model is accurate. Jet black and cinnamon - Best.Combo.Ever.

That said, ther old girl understeered quite a bit - I kept mine stock as it was a lease, and the stock suspension betrayed the car at the limit, though perhaps with aftermarket parts the understeer could be cured. Knowing the V-8 beast was on the horizon messed with me - there were so many hard driving situations where the extra 20% HP was needed and the V8 soundtrack was intoxicating - I had to bite.

The new car is exceptional - it is so balanced and neutral that I know I need to up my game as a driver to get to over 8/10ths of the performance. It feels exceptionally planted vs. the e46, and I don't think this is entirely the weight penalty. The e92 M3 experience is entirely throttle dependant - the timid driver who shifts early commands a porky luxo GT - the driver who gives it the gas can get close to supercar feel for fractions of the price.

One last thought - I could get the e46 on the edge on the street and have fun drifting through turns, yet still be at (somewhat) responsible speeds. To do the same with the e92 M3, you would have to perform at speeds that would earn you a trip to jail (if observed) without passing go and collecting $200. Proof as to the superiority of the new car, but I would love to have the chance to occasionally have my drift e46 car back for some fun.

Had an 02 M3 6MT, kept it a while then moved to a E92 335i... after about 5 month of ownership, while it was a great car I missed the M feel, so moved up to an e92 M.
While I loved the E46... the e92 is just.... something else... In a perfect world i'd definitely own both.

oh my, the pic that shows the front end of both car really make the e46 m3 standout. it has more presence than the new m somehow.

i don't own the new m yet, but I think just the v8 sound alone is worth it to trade up. maybe I will go for an e93 m3. best of both world.

interesting. I'm thinking of getting into a gt3 but your comment really make me think twice. Maybe getting into the new e93 m3 is the way to go as it is more comfy, nice v8 sound, seat 4, vert experience to boost, etc. um....decision, decision

I had the first M3 in Titan Silver, in Central America back in ´01, had it for 7 years until I got this one on Nov '07, it had 120,000km and felt brand new, it always felt so good driving that car, I love the new one, but I was really sad I couldn't keep both of them

I drove a Titanium silver 02 for 6 years. I traded it in for the e92 in early 08. Like everyone else has said, the e92 out performs the e46 in almost every area and is a much more comfortable DD. That said, I still miss my previous car for its raw nature and aesthetics. I wish I could have kept them both, but since I couldn't, I'm glad I'm driving the e92.

E90M3 was my first M3. When I got it, I loved it, but just something was missing. My picture of the "all in 1" car was just a little too refined. Don't get me wrong, it can do everything so well, but just something was missing. So I thought I am a 2 seater car person, and test drove some sports cars, s2000, z4mc.. Almost bought the s2000 but just wanted to continue the "M" bloodline. =)
The S54 engine + 2 seater is something everyone should experience.
The S65 + e9x is something everyone should own as a DD.

I am just happy I have the best of both worlds.

I came from a 2004 E46 M3. Honstly I miss nothing from my E46 M3. I knew I wanted more power than my modified E46 M3 put out. I don't regret the decision at all.

Keep in mind I am 6'4 200 lbs which is why I am leaning towards the 550i or M5. Gas mileage does not matter because in <6 months I will be able to walk (or bus) to work so this would be a pure pleasure and weekend car with a few road trips thrown in.
