iPhone cradle for smartphone integration

My dealer called me and said they received a bulletin that the iPhone cradle (new version) for the smartphone integration was available. By the time he ordered one for me, they were already back ordered. The bad news is that the iPhone cradle costs $175. If you wanted to save a few bucks, get the old version cradle for $116, which gives you everything except the music off the iPhone....and just bring along your iPod for the music.

The cradle is a very tight fit for the iPhone, so if you have a case for the iPhone, you need to remove it before it clicks into the cradle. Once in, the smartphone integration gives you music off your iPhone, along with recharging the phone, and use of the car antenna's for better reception, and static reduction. If you spend a lot of time in your car, it seems the way to go.

Does the cradle pass sound digitally to the car only, or does it plug into the headphone jack/audio port as well? I stopped using my iPhone cable as the sound was analog and I did not want the quality loss of the D->A->D conversion, so I switched to a USB flashdrive.

Maybe I am dumb but I have all of those features now with my iPhone connected to my iPod adapter that came with the car. It is my music, the bluetooth still functions, and it charges. Am I wrong? What is the benefit from this cradle?

The new 09 model M3 with the adapter can play music, phone calls, charge the iPhone and use the external aerial all at the same time with the new Idrive.

The old 08 M3 won't play music threw the adapter at all! as I undersatnd it! you need to use the special y usb cable for music.

Are you talking about the new 3G Iphone adapter, or 2G Iphone adapter? I think there was a cradle for the original iphone for $116, but it didn't work with the new 6NF option. I need the adapter that is for the 2G iphone but works with 6NF (Smartphone Integration).

Only additional benefit is the cradle and connection to the car antenna, boosting your reception somewhat (and letting you have both an iPod and an iPhone charging & iPodable simultaneously).

Saving money in this situation seems pretty foolish. Having to bring an iPod along would be a total pain if you already had your iPhone.

Not necessarily. A older iPod can be used with 6FL and the iPhone can be kept in your pocket. I'm still a user of my 4th Generation 40G monochrome iPod from 2004 - it's my favorite iPod to date. The iPhone stays in my pocket, unless it needs charging.

iPods have been out since 2002, most people have replaced theirs since then. Features are the same, regardless what iPod you use.

Ahhh so added reception thats it? Not worth it for a cradle. You guys know you can listen to music and have the bluetooth from your iPhone now with your current adapters? I do it everyday! And I have a 2G Ipod 3G

I think people know, but sometimes it's nice to have the click-in cradle, so your iPhone doesn't get scuffed. Or maybe you want to charge your iPhone while listening to your (much larger capacity) iPod. Plus the added reception.

It's definitely not for everyone, but when buying a $50K+ car, I think you should get every bell & whistle you want.

I am having an issue with this. Hopefully someone can shed some light or point me in the right direction.

I have the $400 adapter, the $150 Smartphone option, and the reception on my 3G iPhone SUCKS!!! I plug it in to the adapter, right away the phone says ACCESSORY IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH IPHONE. WOULD YOU LIKE TO SWITCH INTO AIRPLANE MODE?? Then, on the iDrive, it has a little "x" by the phone symbol. Only thing I can think is I need to spend ANOTHER $100+ for the adapter. Im not against doing that, just wanna make sure its the right option.

All I do is plug my phone into the adapter and thats it. I don't touch another thing. Make sure your adapter is plugged into both the USB and Aux plugs!

You will need to spend $175 for the newest iPhone cradle which will allow your iPhone to hook up to the car's antennas, which should get you better reception. I get the same warning as you if I plug my phone into the USB port in the center console. The iPhone works fine and you have everything the iPhone cradle will give you, except for the reception and static reduction.

So if you want the latest and greatest, get the NEW iPhone cradle as the older version doesn't support the music on the iPhone. Retail price again is $175. The older cradle was like $117. Quite the price increase for accessing music.

Considering I thought I was taking care of all this with the adapter and the Smartphone option, I will almost TRIPLE the cost of my iPhone to have it BMW'd.

Ok, it's here the new 3G iPhone snap-in, and i have it in my sticky paws!

Spoke to my local dealer and quoted them the part number (84 21 2 151 043) which i got from someone on this forum, can't remember who but thanks, and the dealer initial told me that it's still being tested by BMW but they would email the UK head office to confirm. The next day the dealer calls me an tells me that BMW UK have agreed to release one to me - nice Apparently i'm the first person in the UK to get their hands on one!

Anyway i have the 6NF smart phone integration option and the snap-in works great - no more iPhone rattling around on the end of the damn Y-cable!

Does the new cradle work with the original iPhone as well? Do they even make a 2G iPhone cradle that supports the 6NF option? I would hate to upgrade my phone just to make use of my 6NF option.

The iPod or iPhone does not output sound digitally regardless of if its through the headphone jack or through the docking port. Both outputs are analog so there is no DAD conversion. Its just one DA conversion. The quality of that conversion is suspect though. I myself have also switched to a USB flash drive for convenience.

that looks like quite a redesign compared to the older 2G cradle. Hopefully it will stop the iphone rattling around like the old one.
