Kidney Grill Removal?

Can someone please explain how to remove the front kidney grills? Do I need to remove any bolts or is there a trick to just popping them off? I searched but couldn't find anything. Watched a great DIY on how to paint them....but I can't even get them off. Thanks.

You shouldn't try to just 'pop' them off. You are almost garanteed to break the clips if you do this. You have to remove the 4 bolts on the fron bumper and reach in behind to press on the clips to remove the kidney grills. Good luck!

Remember the clip that is near the headlight is a pain in the you know what. I started with the clips on the bottom then the clip near the headlight with a little screwdriver and everything else popped out nicely. The other grill was easy after that.

I cannot describe the PIA that getting the clip closest to the headlight to release. I mean, it was hell.

My fingers don't work now after working out the two clips closest to the headlights. I am typing with a pencil in my mouth.

This DIY was super helpful! I just installed my new gloss black kidney grilles in less than 10 minutes. I pushed down on the clips and pushed towards the grille (instead of pulled) and it popped out with ease. I agree that the clip closest to the headlights was the hardest to pop out, but I think having small fingers/hands helps

Thanks for the link Bunny. You are Superwoman to do the install in 10 minutes.

I suffer from slight nerve damage in my hands as a result do not have 100% strength in the fingers. I used 2 flathead screw drivers one 3 1/2 inches the other 7 inches in length. Using these two I could wedge the 3 1/2" near the light (definitely the hardest clip) while using the 7" for the other clips.

Thanks for the installation tips... pretty easy to swap grilles once you know how!

Here is my M3 with the new "Edition" black chrome grilles... before and after
