Service at 600 miles?

Hello to all. My first post. I recently had a service call at 600 miles. Computer tells me that i need an oil change. Is this an early 1200 mile service or do i need to go to the 1200 mile service too?

Thanks.

That's the 1200 service, just a 600 miles early warning. You can take it to the dealer and they will perform the 1200 miles service at that mileage...

Yes, but until the car reaches 1200 miles then they won't be able to update the computer. Apparently the computer won't allow it to be updated.

Now before anyone starts to harp on me for this comment, I'm just paraphrasing my Service Tech.

Cheers!

Yes, this is just your 1200 mile service notification. Comes up a little early to give you plenty of time to make an appointment. If you try to get it in right away, they will probably ask you to wait a few hundred more miles. I had another issue my car was in for at around 650. Since I live 3 hours away and they had to keep it overnight anyway, they wanted to do the 1200 miles service for me. They had to get special permission from someone at BMWNA to do it that early. But they will normally do it anytime after about 800 miles. And there is absolutely, positively, no computer update associated with this service.

So that chatter about it being faster after 1200 miles is just a myth, right?

Yes.
If you have DCT, Launch Control will become enabled at 1250 miles, but this happens automatically without service department intervention. Otherwise there is no change in horsepower or performance. All they do at the service is change fluids and filters.

I can swear that the car is different after the service...it feels more smooth and faster it even warms up quicker than before...I didn't have nay message by the 1200 miles but the dealer said it depends on how agressive it is driven...

Kind of strange that the same computer that cannot be "updated" until exactly 1200 miles is the one that it is saying that the 1200 miles service can be done at less than 1200 miles...

Man...how did you get the computer to trip the 1200 mile service at 600 miles. You must be hard on the car during break-in. BMW has always stated that the computer looks at how many cold starts and lots of other criteria, but the truth is it's keyed into a certain number of gallons used. When you have finally exceeded that number (don't know off-hand), the computer trips. So at 600 miles, I'm guessing your gas mileage has been pretty bad. Hopefully not too many trips above 5500 rpms.

I washed and waxed my car last week. I swear it was faster and smoother afterwards. Really.

Not really hard. Bought the car with 31 miles on it (negotiated for it with 21 miles, but that's another story). I've babied it mostly. Maybe passed 5500 rpm about twice and past 105 about same. Averaging 15.4 mpg.

Yeah I got the same thing about 600 miles and then a few days later the dealership called for me to make a appointment. Should I cancel my appointment and call my SA?? to make an appointment at 900 miles? Or should I just take it in for the 1200 since I will be at maybe 800 by Monday??

I haven't been getting on the car at all and like him, I get the service reminder at 600 miles. It's just a reminder.

I recently took my car in to have the DCT upgrade done. Apparently my car started alarming about the service as well. But my Service Advisory told me that he could not do it till the car reaches 1200 miles. He simply stated that "those are the rules". He asked me to ignore the warning till the car is at around 1200 mile. So my suggestion to you would be to wait till the car reaches 1200 miles.

I think you are correct as my 535 is 12 mos old now (with 10K miles). I' m taking it in for the annual oil change and they told me I'd still have to come back for the 15K mile oil change...as this is considered a "low mileage oil change" and they wouldn't be able to reset the computer....I'm like wtf I thought the whole BMW service process was based in CBS or "condition based service" that 15K mileage based service sounds arbitrary to me??

Thanks for the info will talk to my SA monday its going to be a Nice Warm Day in NJ in the 50s woohoo. I still think the CBS system has to be the reason why the warning goes off.
