The truly sad part about all of this is the title caption where the OP paints all Canadians with the image of the seal hunters. This, sadly, perpetuates a stereotype of my American friends that includes a lack of critical thinking and pathological ethnocentricity. Neither characterization is deserved on the whole in my experience.

This might have been a valuable thread if the initial post had been :

The seal hunt has been going on for years and years. There is a vast overpopulation of seals which destroy the fish stock. One of the issues is Atlantic Canadian fisherman have quotas whereas the Americans who fish the same grounds do not. The dwindling cod population is a good example. Seals have no natural enemy enemies in this part of the world so it is up to man.

The seal hunt is not native to Canada, they do it in Alaska as well.

As far as cruelty to animals, maybe take a look at how other direct consumable animals are slaughtered such as chickens, pigs, etc. None of it is very pretty but necessary.

Peta needs a poster child to get peoples emotions running in order to raise donations. It's a business after all.
