How much would you '08 E9X owners pay to upgrade your iDrive?

Like the thread title says, are you '08 E9X owners interested in upgrading your current iDrive system (CCC) to the new system on '09+ models (CIC)? If so, how much would you be willing to spend? Would you be willing to spend more for a BMW solution as opposed to something aftermarket?

Check all that apply.

EDIT: ok, nevermind... I see you've just added the Poll choices.

I've seen the youtube vids but have yet to try the new iDrive in person, but from what I've seen so far and assuming it does google maps integration seamlessly via internet, I'd pay up to $4k installed on it. I'd prefer BMW parts and a BMW retrofit solution rather than aftermarket just in case any bugs and gremlins might arise and I can run to the dealer to have them fix it without giving me crap about how it's aftermarket.

If it's more than $4k it wouldn't be worth it since the existing iDrive works perfectly fine and I already prefer the outgoing iDrive interface over what Audi and Mercedes currently offers.

You rushed me. The poll options have to be created and submitted after posting the thread.

I agree with you 100% regarding a BMW solution. I added a few non-BMW electronic options to my E46, and they regularly had glitches and occasionally had major issues. I have an '09 arriving shortly, but if I owned an '08 would pay much, much more for a BMW solution for the security of a warranty, especially since iDrive is so heavily integrated with the entire car. That's why I structured the poll options the way I did.

Yeah, I was not about to do that double-or-nothing bet on the possibility of a retrofit. I knew to stop while I was ahead! Those funds went toward some aluminum pedals.

For anyone who doesn't already know, PG honored his bet on whether the '09 E92 M3 would receive the new iDrive. He's a stand-up guy.

Before I looked at the survey, I'm thinking my threshold would be about $500 or so. Then I see the lowest dollar amount is $2000. I'm not sure I'd go to that level.

Any more than $2000 to retrofit and it is easier, cheaper and just plain better to trade up for an '09...

Honestly, is it really worth the hassle and expense (retrofit) or the huge loss you most certainly would take (trade in for an 09)?

Let's be serious. The current iDrive is more than adequate. Do you really need a few more buttons and a slightly prettier interface? If you start worrying about having the newest feature, you will be constantly trading up and constantly hemorrhaging money.

True...true. I think it would be a little more than $2000 but under $2500 in my opinion just due to the need to re-do some many things up front. First the front dash if NOT a double hump needs one, then oh add the new screen for better visability. And remember the new idrive uses a harddrive for nav right? The new idrive controller is probably a plug in play piece but you'd need a new template/cut out on the center console and front center piece slightly. Add in re-programming or flashing the computer to accept idrive v 09removing the extra DVD drive maybe and that's a bit of work. You might as well redo/rebuild the dash almost.

Oh yeah the labor it will cost your friendly BMW master technician to do all that work at $100+/hr! Yeah we'd be lucky if BMW would offer it at less than a $3k upgrade. I think if it could be done..it would be a little harder than a plug and play to get full compatibility...but I am sure someone (PencilGeek maybe or BMW Mexico) with the funds will try it sooner or later.

As a compromise tho..I for one would take the new controller (easy plug and play and cut job likely) and upgrade of the old idrive software just keeping the old screen (unless the new one was an easy 1:1 swap out) and just have the added functions of the new software (ease of use, MPG-4 play ability to the old DVD NAV drive, and smartphone access, etc). Built in Harddrive for maps would be nice but unless it would be a plug and play option that could be like put in the glove or somewhere under the dash it's not important enough to have them tear up my whole dash for i-drive 09! Now that's an option I could live with that wouldn't cost BMW or us $$$$ and would make alot of early '08 M3 adopters/owners happy.

Probably never happen but can dream can't I?

It really sucks that only the new Idrive works with Google's My Info.
