Tires are pretty much going to be around $200-$300 each, depending on brand and size. You might still be able to get some good deals on Tire Rack close outs. Sometimes you find a great deal - we got a full set for the 335i at about $700 installed last year.

If you want to keep the stock sizes, but don't want to buy a brand new set of stock wheels, check out the buy/sell forum on this site for low mileage take offs. Or, call up tire rack (or look at the website) and find out about getting some cheap aftermarket wheels in stock wheel sizes.

For any last minute winter shoppers, we are all out of the Sport Edition A7 that I had mentioned as the primary choice for Tire Rack winter packages. We will be restocking this wheel, but I doubt that we will see any more for the snow season.

Edit in response to a PM question: No, the 18x9 ET20 should not be used on the front. Rubbing is not your friend.

I am glad I got mine when I did.

I haven't seen anyone post this before, but I noticed the ASA logo is cast into the back of each wheel. That made me feel a little better about the quality.

I bought the Pirelli Sottozero II 235/40-18; 255/40-18 winter tires from Tire Rack to go on the stock 18" takeoffs that I bought from a fellow member here. I live in the Denver area and we get relatively frequent snows, but the roads are plowed right away and it usually clears in no more than two-days. I wanted a tire that would get me around in the snow and still be more than competent in the dry. This tire really fills the bill, giving me a very secure feeling on snow, ice, wet and dry. (My summer tires are the Michelin 19" PS2s).

BTW, Tire Rack's service was great, with quick turn around. Their recommended local installer "Swis Tire" had the most amazing installation equipment that I've seen, giving me the most secure feeling I've ever had with a tire-monkey handling expensive wheels and tires.

would 245/40 R18 fronts fit? What about 265/40 R18 rears as a staggered set on OEM 18" wheels? Tried to reach Ben but got voicemail. Can't find a set of my preferred Bridgestone Blizak LM-25 at least the fronts anywhere in recommended sizes.

I was hoping my PS2's would last long enough to use my stock 18's for a winter setup this year. My car needs new rear tires to pass inspection and I'd rather not drop the money on new PS2's if I'm going to take them off in 2 months.

Would any of the popular winter tires (e.g. LM-25 or LM-60 Blizzaks, Wintersports) be acceptable over the next two months for a daily driver?

Also, what tires would you recommend? 245/40R18 all around? 235 front and 255 back?

In my opinion it will be fine. I had winter tires on my E46 well into the summer in the months prior to selling it simply because I knew I was going to get rid of it and did not want to spend money on new summer tires (mine were worn out). It handled and performed just fine.

I have stock-sized winter tires, i.e. 245 front, 265 rear. I find it to be a great setup. For the (many) days when its not snowy, it basically performs identical to stock.

The performance winter tires are pretty decent on dry roads. They're no PS2, but they're respectable if you can remember not to push them too hard.

Keep in mind that they wear faster in warm weather, so the more you can baby them when it's warm, the better.

Yeah it looks like the 18s only come in the stock size for the front wheel while the 19s only come in the stock size for the rear.

For 18s, The 255/45 or 255/40 would probably work in the rear (not sure which one will come closest to stock diameter - you'd have to run numbers I guess). You could probably do the 235/75 on the stock wheel also, but that's probably not the better choice for a winter setup.

For 19s (which probably isn't the best choice for winter to begin with) it looks like the 245/40 would be the only one that comes close to stock for the front.

235/35R19 would be an option for 19" fronts. That would be the equivalent dimensions of the BMW recommended 235/40R18 winter size.

Yeah tried that but could only get 1 LM-25 in that size 235/40 R18 in the whole US and I called around for about a week. So hat's a no go for that tire.

Yes but that option is not available (your recommended one for 18") for the LM-60s according to your link. What do you suggest?

So what are the options you have Ben? When will they be avail? Tried calling you but got voicemail each time. Will need to order winter rubber within the next few weeks as it looks to be an early and colder winter if things continue this way as we're seeing fall temps NOW in the NE and its what Sept 15th just now.

I read quite a few reviews and comparisons and the Blizzak LM-60 seemed like the best winter tire for those in your position

Tire Rack doesn't carry them, but I put Nokian Hakka R's on my E90 before last winter and they are well beyond anything I've had before (Blizzaks, Dunlop WS M3, etc.) Downsides are that they are really soft and fairly expensive, but I had the same requirements as you - max traction, not performance. Very confidence inspiring tire in deep snow, icy/slushy conditions, you name it.

245/40R18 front just like OE summer. 255/40R18 rear. Not much of a stagger, but if you've gotta have LM60 and you've gotta have staggered, that makes the most sense.

Fronts not in stock yet, but should be in mid-October or so. We can take orders for them already.

Hi Ben - Does all around 245/45/18 works well on the OEM 18" gun metal rims even if they are wider or do I need to get new rims if I am running that setup? Just planning to get the tires and not another set of rims that I have to store once winter is over. thanks!
