Alcantara Headliner

Anyone done this yet? Ideas about the cost to do it?

I was just thinking about this. Alcantara headliner and HUD are the only two things the M5 has that I wished I could've ordered on the M3. My only concern is that such aftermarket upholstering will surely present uncertainties as to how the side-curtain airbags will deploy in the event of a crash. Hopefully this will be never be an issue but it is a safety concern and a risk you take.

I was quoted $1800 for my RS4 by a reputable shop a couple of years ago, so I'm thinking I'd get a similar quote for my moonroof-less M3. I suspect having a moonroof will cost more due to the increased labor of doing the inner retractable panel.

I really want to do this as well. Someone needs to talk to a reputable upholstery shop to get the skinny. I had alcantara in my RS6 and swore I would have it installed in the M3.

I would think the airbag deployment concerns are probably known to shops that have to repair interiors after airbag deployments.

Sorry. I was thinking a diamond encrusted headliner by "Jacob the Jeweler". Perhaps really fuck it up with a little gold plating. NO WAY, I'm going the whole hog and lining the head with woven platinum. Puff Daddy would approve.

I could have fucked it up by adding 400 pounds of retractable dead weight, but I didn't want to be mistaken for a pretentious asshole.

Alcantara would be sexy. Theres a local guy here that can wrap carbon leather, and his whole headliner in his Evo9 is carbon leather.

If you haven't had a car with an alcantara interior, you shouldn't comment. Every A8 I've looked at without it, looks cheap; and there ain't nuttin' cheap about an A8. It's like the difference between cotton and silk. There just isn't any comparison.

Pretty funny about the Puff Daddy comment, though.

There was a guy who retrofitted the headliner with alcantara in his 335. I'll have to look for the link but it wasn't cheap.

The convertible is necessary for my inflated head. And that's 441 pounds. And as for the pretentious asshole comment, I take offense at the term pretentious. Depraved, perhaps. But never pretentious.

+1. The ancantara in the E39 M5 really made that car feel special. If the roof is too much trouble to do on the M3 then I would consider putting alcantara on the top of the dashboard. Black, of course. The texture would be perfect to act as anti-glare.

Depraved asshole? Nah. You're a cock like all the rest of us M3 drivers. (Ok, I'm M3-less right now so I'm no longer a cock, but I used to be so I can still talk.)

Yes, the designers at Porsche, BMW, and Audi are tacky. You got it.

By the way, you live in Plano, home to the tackiest McMansions in the country. We will continue to savor your sense of taste.

You may be M3-less now, but once you've had your way with an M3, you never look back.

Um, and Denver is an architectural gem? Unfortunately, mcmansions pervade every corner of this culturally bereft nation.

Denver? no, it's not a gem. We live here for the mountains.

The mountains? A bit myopic? Kidding man. Just giving the poor lad from Plano a little back up. No problems with a little ribbing. But dissing a man (for we know never to dis the cherubs), dissing his woman, or dissing his heritage (yes, Plano does have rich history), is mal. With the alcan-whatever issue, my seven doctorate degrees (Harvard, Yale, LSE, MIT, Sorbonne, Max Planck, SSBI (Secondary School of Bureau Investigators (FBI was wait listed)) led me to the conclusion that you are secretly a 7 profile, trapped in an M3. Now, normally I charge vast sums for guidance, but today I roll pro bono. Focus on the good. The wicked performance, the renegade rep, and the fucking thrill of driving. And forget about the sweet trappings of Alcan Aluminum as your headliner. Instead, line your head with thoughts of double apexes, tread-wearing slides, and chicks digging your massive redline. Sorry. Got a bit ahead of myself.

Yea it's tacky. Um, I don't live in some mansion. Just a regular house, thanks.
