I've hit birds at least twice that I can remember. One hit the top part of the front of the hood and bounced (what seemed like) straight up. I saw it hit the road behind me in my rearview mirror. Another one hit the radio antenna. Lucky shot I guess.

When flying, I've been on collision courses with birds many times but in all cases they veer off before getting hit. That's a good thing since planes generally travel much faster than cars and you've seen here what they can do to cars. The military loses lots of planes every year to birds being sucked into engines. The specifications for jet engines used on airliners call for the engine to survive even if it ingests a bird. Learjet procedures call for the pilot or crew to turn on the windscreen defroster below 10,000 feet (or thereabouts) so that it is more pliable should a bird hit it.

I think they should change the vegetarian rules to allow them to eat chicken and turkey.

Yeah, looking at some of the pics on this thread, I guess I'm really glad that the crow just glanced off the top of my windscreen!

You think? I am actually wondering if it played any (small) part in what happened.

It's weird though.....

Anyhow, at that time they mentioned that the bimmer was traveling at a speed of ~140MPH / 230 km/h when it hit this fox. I am not sure 100% about this speed though as it sounds a little high, but if you think that the crow hitting a car made some noise... imagine here????

I sure hope not to hit one of the many deer or other wild animal that live in the tri-state area!

Nastiest thing I have ever seen guys... poor fox man. That really REALLY sucks. I have a funny story to go along with the OP's start... On my DRIVING TEST, when I first turned 16 I had this blind as a bat old woman giving me the test. The drive started out behind the DMV and we were driving out of the parking lot, there was a HUGE puddle ahead and the lady told me to just drive through it, no need to slow down its there everyday. On this day there were like 400 birds drinking I guess and I figured they would fly out of the way so I cruise through. Not the greatest Idea, I think I ran over a few, but this lady told me to go through it!... She ended up yelling at me and deducting points, telling me I was heartless and that I should have known better. Keep in mind I am 16 and ALL I WANT is my license and to pass my test! Bitch. I did feel bad about the birds though...

I pulled over and checked for damage. None, thankfully. I never knew you could hit a bird in flight with a car. Never had that happen before. I thought the aerodynamics would prevent that, and that made me wonder...do you guys think the air vent on the left of the bonnet could have been part of the reason?

Thoughts?
I would be careful. That family of Raven going to being keeping an eye on you. They will attack when least expected. j/k

I did the same thing! I was rinding a ZX10 and going through a corner at about 50 and a huge blackbird flew right out and bounced off my fairing, then my shoulder/arm.

Holy shit did that hurt. Felt like somebody threw a bag of cement at me. Cracked the fairing too.

This thread is , but kind of funny.

Your bird had enough inertia that it just kept going in a relatively straight line even though the airflow goes up and over the car. It is the old F = M*A equation.

I once hit a ruffed grouse years ago at about 100 km/hr. It came up out of the ditch and straight into the grill. It made one hell of loud bang. No chance it was going to get sucked over the car in the slipstream.
