Palin bills state for nights at home, kidsí travel

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26616212/

ANCHORAGE - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a "per diem" allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business.

The governor also has charged the state for travel expenses to take her children on official out-of-town missions. And her husband, Todd, has billed the state for expenses and a daily allowance for trips he makes on official business for his wife.

Palin, who earns $125,000 a year, claimed and received $16,951 as her allowance, which officials say was permitted because her official "duty station" is Juneau, according to an analysis of her travel documents by The Washington Post.

I'm not necessarily a GOB fanboy, but I don't see a problem with "perks" for a thankless job that pays small 6-figures and requires frequent long-distance travelling due to their remotness. She's got a family life too, and any job that pulls more than the family needs to compensate for it.

Maybe the Washington Post should have looked at this document; http://fin.admin.state.ak.us/dof/ak_...source/60t.pdf

Governor Palin followed the state's policy for per diem.

Quote:
M&IE
Meals and incidental expense allowance. The portion of per diem that reimburses travelers for the cost of meals and necessary incidental expenses including tips, laundry expenses, and other personal costs of travel.

The per diem consists of two parts, meals and incidental expenses, and lodging.

Per Diem
Per diem allowance is a daily payment instead of reimbursement for actual expenses for lodging, meals, and incidental expenses. It is separate from transportation expenses and other miscellaneous expenses.

Residence
The residence of a traveler is the location, or within 50 miles thereof, where the traveler maintains the primary dwelling. If a traveler maintains multiple residences, the commissioner of the department shall designate the residence that bears the most logical relationship to the traveler's duty station as the traveler's primary residence. Factors to be considered in determining the primary residence include: the time ordinarily spent performing duties at each location; the degree of business activity at each location; the relative amount of state wages earned at each location. Agencies may also contact the Division of Finance for assistance. [NOTE - obviously the governor of Alaska's duty station is not Wasilla, and so her primary residence is the gov's mansion]

M&IE Rules for Specific Situations
...If a traveler maintains a dwelling at their destination and it is available to them [NOTE - think Wasilla], they will be entitled to only an M&IE allowance for normal workdays. [NOTE - which is what she claimed] An M&IE allowance for other than normal workdays is not allowed.

Alaska Administrative Manual - Accounting Travel 60.28
If a traveler is temporarily returned to the travelerís duty station while on a long-term assignment and is continuing to receive a long-term lodging per diem, the traveler is not entitled to any M&IE allowance while at the duty station. [NOTE - she did not claim per diem while at governor's mansion]
According to the Post, she did not claim lodging when she was in Wasilla

I haven't looked at this issue myself, but I heard on the radio that Sarah Palin claimed 80% less than the previous Administration for expenses.

I would be amazed if msnbc did anything but bash anyone who is not a socialists. For anyone who disagrees let me ask you... why were Olberman and Mathews taken off msnbc coverage? Maybe because they were so far left they had the worst ratings in msnbc history?

Heaven forbid they question Obama's very shady background.

I wonder if they were demoted because it was MSNBCs attempt to quell the call for sensorship that has been taking place for a few years now. Look at McCain-Feingold. Look at what the Democrats have been promoting against talk radio. Look at the Fairness Doctrine.

I doubt that NBC and MSNBC want to go down that road, so they are trying to lay aside the argument.

Though Olberman is no longer the host of his own show, the woman last night who was promoted to that spot didn't take the role seriously. It was still Olberman all the way.

If this theory is wrong, them it might be that MSNBC expects to get away with bashing Sarah Palin through a woman's mouth, rather than a loud-mouthed jerk.

Well, i'm an underpaid accountant. Maybe i should skim a little money off the books since i'm underpaid for the hard work that i do for my company.

I know every job has its perks. If i worked at a CocaCola plant, I'd take a bottle of coke every now and then if the boss didn't mind. If i worked as management at a car dealership, i'd borrow a car for the weekend. If i were a governor I'd have lots of people that i could call on for favors and take my wife to a lot of fancy client's dinners, etc. But i wouldn't spend taxpayer money for housing my kids. But if i did i couldn't also claim the moral high ground when it comes to discretionary spending.

I haven't read much at all about this situation, but if Palin were a lawbreaker in this, then she should face the charge and offer an explanation. There are some very specific laws on the use of public funds that are probably significantly different from state to state.

Corruption is something we need to root out and end. However, to do so definitively would leave us with no leaders at all. If there is an offense that begs a penalty, then bring it. Otherwise, right-size the argument.

Going to work and back is VERY much different than staying in your office whole day and claiming lunch expenses.

But what do you know -- you're a war profitter, getting $$$ from any side in the war...

Just be happy he didn't use "Marxist commie", but since the end of the Cold War that slam just doesn't bite anymore, "socialist" sounds European, almost French, and what could be more insulting than that?
