And hence the reason a crate 911 turbo engine is 40k compared to a 911 S engine for 10k. AWD is nice but it is also very common to see the front drivetrain removed in a 911 turbo (very easy process) for weight reduction and driving dynamics.
The RMS leaks still happen in the GT1 block based cars. Happens less, but still happens.

New M3 over old 996turbo any day. If you were talking 993 turbo I could understand the tough decision, but the 996 is not exactly a classic, just an outdated car.

NOT EVEN CLOSE. It's in the little league. and besides, every Tom Dick and Harry could own one. and they do, and they think there cool.

Here in MSP there are only 5 or 6 Turbo's around compared to 10.000 of the Chevy.
yes your right on 3 accounts.

1. too many regular vettes made, but it makes it feasible for the average hard working American to obtain a super car.

2. Yes the 911 TT finish much better.

3. The refinement of 911 TT better also.

But,

Performance on the ZO6, better.

1. Rolling
2. Top end
3. certain lap times better.

So you get more refinement and cold weather driveability with the 911, but it costs $130-150k, a Z $72-83k, ones preference and criteria when buying a car as well as budget dictates what he buys.

But just for info the Z is still considered an exlusive car, due to supercar performance and from 2006, eventhough not as much as a 911 TT. Only about 6,000-8,000, Z06's roll out of the Bowling Green plant each year. Definately not as exlusive as other exotics, but I would not rank the 911 TT in the same exclusivity as a Ferrari.

to my knowledge the 997 came out in Apr 04 and in July 07 they hit the 100,000 production mark. So only 7,000-10,000 less 911's than C6's per year, not sure how much 911 TT made per year.

bump to an old thread. Now after 4 years of ownership i'm thinking of selling the M3 and going 996 or 997TT. Something between 01-08.

Curious what people think now that they have had the M3 for so long. I really miss the torque and the driver feel of my previous m3.

I was in the same boat, decided to keep the M3. I am still drooling over heavily modifed 996's right now lol... It comes down to the M3 being a newer car and I do feel that the 996s do look dated since the 997 has been out. If you have the money for a 997 I would say take that step forward and it wont feel dated at all.

I haven't driven a 996 or even a 997.1 but I have a 997.2 and I completely agree the M3 is a much better driving experience. Porsche has low speed grip advantage...but that's about it.

Like several others here, I have been tossing around the same decision. I figured about $2k per year for the pcar. I was leaning heavily towards the 996TT before this thread.

Now back to the M3 or 5.0.

Seriously? I'm talking about a 997 turbo. The difference is astronomical. M3 is a cruiser. I've been driving for 4 years and you have to try to make it open up. It's a engine you have to rev. Steering feel on the 911 is way better.

Well, my M3 has an ESS 650 S/C, Akra Evo, a 380/365 big brake kit and some other stuff so it's not stock. But yes seriously my modded M3 is miles better than my modded 997.2 Turbo S. It's going to take at least $15K in suspension upgrades to make the Turbo S trackable given how utterly scary it is even at 8/10ths. Yeah it fast as f()ck, but that's not everything.
