New lens ;)
75-300mm Canon. This is going to help so much on the shots I need at sporting events. It really jumps out there and graps things from far away.
![]() here are some shots I got this evening with it. Baby horse ![]() ![]()

I strongly suspect that if you paid $500 you bought the 75-300 IS lens - which idoes indeed cost twice what the non-IS costs. Probably worth it when introduced, but for a similar price the 70-300IS that replaced it seems to get better reviews.

With today's lens designs (AR coatings, ED glass, etc) flare is a non-issue. That's what the lens hoods / shades were originally designed to prevent. Now they include them becuase people don't know any better, and demand them, but lens construction has changed dramatically. Lenses back in the day were heavy beasts that were much more rugged than today's lenses, and usually, were not zoom lenses.
The lens in question (as most are these days) is a zoom lens that has an extending front element. These are not terribly strong, and if you happen to accidentally knock the lens around, the shade produces added leverage on the front of the lens, and will increase the likelyhood that you will knock it out of allignment and need an expensive repair. If you drop it with the hood on it, just scoop it up and take it straignt to the repair shop. If you think you need it to protect the front element, just get a good UV filter, which you should be using anyway. In short, the pros and cons of the hood: Pros: 1. None that I know of Cons: 1. More crap to carry 2. No photographic benefit 3. Increased likelyhood of damage to the lens Mine are all sitting in a box in my basement.
