Post RS5 already??? vs M3

this was on another part of the forum:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=166219

We all knew that the C63 would have an edge on straight line speed but the M3 corners and laps faster. Now comes the moment of truth, a grippy more powerful competitor for the M3!

I'll be watching this closly.

C'mon M3!!!!

I'm skeptical. This is the same magazine which said it had pictures of the new M3 way before official release. These 'pictures' turned out to be photoshops.

No chance!

The RS5 doesn´t come as earlier as Geneva 2009 ... the only new Audis for 2008 are the RS6 sedan in October and the new S4 (with loaded V6) in December.

I don't believe what you are seeing is anything other than a photoshop. There is shots of a Black RS5 testing in Vegas, maybe they have had inside hands on experience of the development programme, that happens from time to time. Most believe the engine is turboed, mainly because of how successful the RS6 engine has been in both power and efficiency, also the figure of 450hp sounds like a smaller unit than the 4.2L, I'm guessing 4.0L (a RS6 engine minus 2 cylinders) but it will still rev quite high (maybe 7300~7500rpm).

But just say everything in that article is true, what torque must this engine not be producing, the bigger RS6 has 580hp+650Nm, divide that by 5 and multiple by 4 and you get 464hp+520Nm, this latter figure is inside the 550Nm the new DSG gearbox can cope with so things are looking about right.

Should be a beast.

wondering what the pricing of the RS5 will be like though considering I got my M3 for the price of the S5.

Even if it will exist or it does exist in the form of a testing mule, you can't compare the two: apples and oranges. If BMW wants to step-up the competition, they can use a turbo-charge on the E9X M3; which we all know that that might not happen on the E9X body style. Maybe the next generation, we might see a turbo-charged M3 on the CSL.
Who knows and who cares. I still like the E9X M3, and like I always say: it is not the car that makes the driver; it is the driver that makes the car.

I'm also calling this rumor rubbish. The reality is that you can't even get an S5 most places in the U.S. If and when this RS5 arrives it'll be $85K base and imported in such small numbers that dealers will pad that price with hefty markups. Pass.

All S and RS models come with polish alloy wing mirrors. You comment shows you ignorance, always best to learn your enemy.

It takes an ignorant person like you to know one. And if you have noticed, that I was asking a question.

Damn, if it has a turbo V8 it will be very hard to ignore. The only problem is it won't drive like an M3, just accelerate better.

I agree, it will be closer to old school Audi than new Audi (R8). But does it need to drive like an M3, surely that is what the M3 is meant to do. We want an RS5 to be an Audi first and then drive with best steering and feel less nose heavy.

In the most part the old RS4 delivered on this point but because of it's awd system it would still understeer, a thing that can't really change, it's the nature of the beast. The one thing the RS5 will do is be quicker almost every where compared to the M3, be it on the straights, in the corners, on the track or on the road.

You just have to choose the E that appeals to you most. Efficiency or Entertainment.

This is all conjecture, but putting that aside, if it is powered by a turboed 4.0 and only produces 36 more horses than the NA 4.0 in the //M, I would be far from impressed with that engineering feat......

Is the only thing that impresses people about an engine is it's horsepower rating?

Having driven lots of different cars I can see merits in every form, be it N/A or FI. I look at the RS6 engine and see something which doesn't drive or behave like your typical turbo engine, the same is true for the 335i and the reason is simple, smaller turbos with low pressure. If Audi do give the RS5 a turbo engine I would imagine it will behave very similar to that of the RS6, i.e. little to no lag, mountains of torque everywhere, very efficient and at no point in the rev range will it feel less than ultra strong.

BMW will go down this route too at some point, what will you say then?

Hmmm. I wouldn't be so quick. I would bet these mirrors are actually plastic. Your handle is working great here, foot->mouth. Heck even if by some miracle they are genuinely metallic they certainly are not polished - they are brushed. Come on Audi boy
