Because introducing a general limit on the German Autobahn was discussed some time ago I was thinking about the very same question. I still don't think it would be a waste then. There are a lot possibilites to have fun here, even when obeying the speed limits.

Best regards, south

I don't think the car companies care....the ///M cars are not sold on what they actually do but on what they CAN do theoretically in some deserted road with no police.

sorry for going off topic
but i do agree both parties are the same
they will all promise the moon before elected
and at the end of the day after they are elected
they will do the same things

but to give Facists their credit, they did give us the M3

Shooting in LA is kinda of a normal routine. You ever seen the movie LA Story by Steve Martin? At one point, he was driving, he looked at his watch, he took out a gun and started shooting in the air; so did the rest of the drivers.

I'm not buying a M to speed on highways, but rather to enjoy it on the twisty back rods that surround my house (miles and miles so I guess i'm lucky)

I don't see a point to speeding on the highway:
1. Going 120 mph, IMHO, is not any funner than going 70 mph.
2. Most of the times you get pull over is on the highway, at least that's the case in Ohio
Bottom Line, Speeding on the highway is a high risk (ticket) low reward thing for me.

T-Bone - really does suck. I do think these hi-po cars are somewhat wasted.

Deutschland Über Alles (war's been over long time guys). Thank god there's still the Autobahn - so glad I get to go there at least every 18 mths.

T-Bone,

As I said, you are on a roll buddy. By the way, completely agree with you rants about the direction the M division is headed. Maybe they should call it the M-WDPMG Division for watered downed pudgy money grab. I guess nowadays it is ALL about making money, nothing more. Interesting discussion on who is to blame for the denigration our freedoms. Sen. John Warner, a Republican from Virginia, wants to introduce the double nickel speed limit. If that happens, save your money and buy Hondas. Socialists in Germany want to speed limit the autobahn and Switzerland is looking into banning most cars. If that happens, buy a 320d a Colnago and call it a fruitful life.

Heavy powerful cars are simply not much fun on public roads, especially in North America. One can obtain more driving pleasure throwing Caymans and Miatas into hairpin turns at speeds well below 60 mph than trying to sneak pudgy beasts up to jailbird speeds just to get a taste of their sweet spot.

The usefullness of ///M cars was on my mind today and a natural outcome would be a Bentley Convertible....oddly enough, this is a natural car to get if I want something nice that I don't want to drive very fast.

Scary I know.

Er... at least be honest with your ire. Congress passed it and continues to keep it alive. Plenty of democrats voted for it to put it in place and expand it. I don't care much for either party... it's often hard to tell the difference really.

But lets not digress...

You guys in Toronto have 4 of North America's best road courses within a 6 hour drive. Mosport, Calabogie, Mont Tremblant, and Watkin's Glen. That's where the M performance can really be explored.

a casio is more accurate than a Rolex, Panerai or IWC and 1/100th the cost...

but which would you rather have...although we can't drive the cars they were meant to be driven (Ring & autobahn) we can still appreciate them

although sustaining 120+ for an hour would be fun

Why are you saying this, when you said this?

It offers two excellent tranmission choices and the best trick LSD in a production car. The M boys did us good. I love M3s like no other car.

Through no fault of their own, the M boys couldn't have been unluckier in the timing of the release of their latest beast. Economics and fuel prices are in the process of killing the sales of this car. This is good for the current M owner and the enthusiast who can look past the present and into the future and see the much bigger picture. The high revving flat torqued S65 is an "exotic" sounding and performing piece of engineering genius that could of pushed the M3 into 80+k territory. Instead, one with a fair amount of means, can purchase a base car at bargain basement price of less than 60k and they even throw in a free car and maintenance to boot. Who would of thunk?

What are BMW and the M division to do in economic times that resemble the 70s. May I make some humble suggestions. FI needs to be the future of BMW but not the M Division. I hope BMW sticks with the basic configuration of the S65. They had better be working on implementing cutting edge DFI technology and the much ballyhooed KERS technology into a new S65. Imagine in few short years the M3 gaining a second life with a NA powerplant that now generates in the neighborhood of 450 hp with a high red line, flat as a table top torque curve and weighs the same or if we are real lucky, a bit less than the current car. And here is the kicker 23+ mpg highway and NO gas guzzler tax. DFI is the critical component to making this car happen. The same treatment can be done to the amazing S85 V10. Again, as I have argued until I am blue in the face, DFI is the critical component here. The R&D needs to be spent there, rather than the current focus of hocus pocus and overly complicated electronics that dilute the driving experience, drive up cost, and create reliability issues galore.

Then BMW can finally bring to market a true halo M car, the worthy successor to the vaunted M1. A V8/V10 configured mid engine car weighing significantly less than the M3 and at a slightly lower price point than a heavier all wheel drive R8...I like dreaming, especially about playing cat and mouse with an F430.

Finally, BMW must decide to CPO their current and future M cars. To not, is simply conceding to the wise consumer what BMW must already understand that owning an M for more than a few years will be a reliability and money pit nightmare. BMW stop washing your hands of your M cars once the dotted line has been signed. Simplify your cars and make them more reliable and support your own product with a CPO stamp of approval.

True. That's one of the reasons I drive an ///M. Even if you never drive 10/10ths of its capabilities you're probably going with the traffic flow. Then you are driving an exceedingly safe 4/10ths of the ///M. Nothing could be safer or smarter.

You CAN safely drive triple digits in North America, for DAYS if you pick the right area. I have personally done it every year for 20+ years. This doesn't mean doing stupid driving, but rather driving in areas where the traffic and cop density is very low. Favorites are much of Montana and Wyoming, the majority of the Alaska Highway, US 50 in Nevada ("The Loneliest Highway in America"), parts of I-80, I-94, I-8, and I-15, the six lane section of the Maine Turnpike, parts of the Mass Pike, TransCanada 2 in New Brunswick, etc, etc. Some roads are technically boring but made interesting by wildlife appearing suddenly from the treeline but most are rather interesting at high speed.

If I didn't do these kind of runs yearly I'd rethink an ///M for a couple of nanoseconds - but probably no more than ten

OT. Sorry guys for being an asshole when I responded against those political name calling. As much as possible, political views should be off this forum. Back to the main topic. Speed limit or not, it is not a waste if you enjoy driving your car everyday. A plus side is, if you track your car at least once a year. Speed up safely and if possible, legally.

Yes, I love Mosport and Watkins Glen but even at these tracks, the ///M car is still a bit of a compromise versus something like a GT3 or a dedicated track car.

I have been looking for R compounds for my M6 for a year and now the 888s and the new PSCs seem to be available....

I will try to make it out the track a bit more but getting tailgated by minivans by a man with no balls is frustrating.....
