BMW Performance Wheel (many pictures)
Here's pictures of every menu and option in the BMW Performance Steering Wheel for the E92 M3.
Application: E92 M3 6-speed. (Fully DCT compatible.) Options: Provided with the alcantara center hub, but that looked cheesy and didn't have the M3 logo, so I kept the original steering wheel hub. Installation: be ready for a surprise. The inststallation manual calls for 1.5 hours installation, but the instructions have been changed and now require the installation of a new steering wheel angle sensor. The new installation time is about 4-4.5 hours. PG, can you please clarify more on the Steering Wheel Angle sensor? Was it something that had to be ordered? Are there a new set of instructions for the M3 application? Thanks and congrats on the install!

I bring in the car and drop it off. I get a call during lunch and the dealer and they are whining that the installation is taking a LOT longer than the 1.5 hours they quoted me because of this angle sensor replacement. When I get back to work, I look up the installation manual that has been posted here, and don't see anything about it. I call the dealer and say "hey, I've got the actual BMW installation manual and it doesn't say anything about it." The SA asks me to fax it, then he calls me back an hour later and says the car is done. He's only going to charge me for the 1.5 hours he quoted me, plus 1.0 hours for adjusting my headlights (got out of whack when the car was down at Eibach). The dealer claims the installation manual changed from the one I sent them. But I wasn't charged for the sensor, and it doesn't appear on the invoice. If they did install it, the dealer just happened to have one in stock. So I have no idea if they actually installed one or not...even though they say they did.

Pretty cool stuff. And I'm assuming it also gauges RPMs - shift notice?
Looks great... I think you have the best modded M3 on the board.

It doesn't have an RPM guage, per se. But it does do the shift points on the side LED's (see 'Shift meter' pictures).

Update: There's also the possibility that the sensor came with the steering wheel. There was a whole box of parts that came along with it. I didn't open it up and inspect them individually...but it seemed like there were at least 3 or 4 parts inside of it.

I did the wheel install myself. It took a couple hours since the process was completely new to me. However, I am a little curious as to why they would not list the SAS install on the finished work order. When I had brought my car in for service Morristown BMW listed EVERYTHING they did, including my request to make sure my steering wheel was aligned properly.
The box of parts came with the wheel, new wiring harness, and a new coil spring. I'm always a bit skeptical of dealers but I think they might have been just covering for the fact that it took them nearly 5 hours to install it. The SAS is actually inside the steering wheel column and THAT process is a 4 hour job if you know what you are doing.

Awesome pics, thank you, the wheel looks fantastic. A couple of questions. 1) How useful/visible do you find the shift lights during serious performance driving, when you really want your eyes glued to the road and not looking at the rev counter? Much better/worse than the standard shift lights above the rev counter? 2) In practice does it lead to better timed 8400rpm shifts or make it easier to achieve same? 3) What is the sequence after the last lights light red? Do they then flash like the standard ones? (I notice that in one of the pics where you have set it to trigger at 3500rpm, all the lights are lit at just 2700rpm or thereabouts which would seem early) Regards Mick |

Mickb,
1. Because the wheel is in your periphery vision it is easy to know when it's telling you to shift. 2. Yes, one reason why it is better over the standard shift light is because it doesn't take throttle response in the equation. Normally, the integrated lights above the tach only come on depending how quickly you are approaching redline. With the wheel, you will see it if you stomp on it to 8400 or take it slow. The shift lights use a percentage to determine how the lights come on. I don't have the actual numbers in front of me but it is in the manual actually. 3. Like I said just before, the system uses a percentage to determine which LEDs to light up on the wheel. When he hits 3500 all the lights will come on, stay solid for a split second, and then flash to notify you to shift.

Looks very nice. I am currently happy with the OEM steering wheel, but out of curiousity how much did that run you?
