i've had this same experience happen to me as well, i'm slowly getting used to "double clicking" the shift knob just out of habit when starting out now though.

yes, S3.

I'd wager that you were confused but in any case a video would be nice.

I've not had the opportunity to drive the M3 with M-DCT. Did you guys not test drive the car before purchasing? and if the answer is yes...then why didn't you notice this then???

Totally! Wonder why BMW chose different defaults for USA vis-a-vis Europe, some market research group perhaps?

When I go to the Settings on the I-drive it shows that it's in S5 mode, and its the only setting avaliable.

I did not.

Even after having it a week, I am still not used to it...although I am vigilant NOW about making sure it is in D when I want it to be!

Absolutely. This car revs really fast and I did what Tim did more than once when my car was pretty new. Very easy to do.

Although it is obviously possible to configure the car to default to D2 or S3 (seems to also loosely imply other modes may be possible as well) I seriously doubt BMW service folks in each of our countries will let each of us choose. It may be coded at a level that only the BMW factory has access to. We can only wish...

Back when most of us ordered our cars there were no DCTs available to test drive. In fact very few on this forum have DCT still.

You guys should report this to the dealership as a safety issue. Like you say, its definitely possible to have the car start in a D mode if BMW NA wants it to, since it's that way in Europe. This was a marketing decision, no doubt, and was probably made with little consideration for practicality. No one involved in making this decision will agree it makes sense once they've lived with it as their own car (which won't happen).

Quick question: Did BMW added/updated the software to allow and/or add more functionality during the warranty period. I am hoping that BMW will add that DCT mode functionality for current owner not just brand new or future DCT option.

I already have reported it and my CA is looking into if it can be changed. I informed him that the Euro cars appear to all default to D2, so it should be readily changable. I will let you know what I find out.

Yeah, both times it happened when I jumped on it pretty hard. Just a total mental lapse on my part...I am on top of it now, but would like it changed in case the wife ever needs to drive the car. It needs to be as simple as possible to avoid the same thing happening to her. If I tell her, just push the lever right and drive it like an auto, she will do fine.

really annoying I agree. I have M-button, so I have that configured to D5 so I always have to push that button. i prefer sport plus throttle anyway so that's also set in m button.

I do hate that it will default back to S3. So just in case I shift to S5 then hit the M-button to give me D5 (sport plus, MDM etc.) that way if I switch from D to S from time to time I can be sure they both are in 5.

should be key-dependent setting for sport plus, MDM and D(whatever) but not the case so M-button is the next best thing.

No test drive my car was the first DCT ever sold at my dealership. Likely most people buy without test drive.

What do you propose we should do about it after a test drive anyway? Say: "it starts in S3 so I'm not taking the car?"

Fairly nail bitting to get the transmission without a test drive, but the DCT is the best feature of the car (IMO).

it sucks to have it default to S3 but I live with it.

really bad is if you have to leave it with a valet. What the heck? They don't know how to drive the DCT (likely) so they will rev it to the rev limiter. WTF BMW is thinking? Why not have D3 default or key-dependent setting?
