HELP!! Someone tell me there is an answer...

Ok, so I started noticing a faint "clunk" when depressing clutch and slowing down/speeding up, and changing from first to second....I now have 4000 miles on my M and the "clunk" is now and "CLUNK!!!!!!"...I take it to BMW and they print me out a service article from the BMW stating my EXACT situation...the guy tells me I pretty much have to live with it...DOUBT IT...It seems like it is getting worse every day, sounds like a bowling ball rolling around in my trunk....so I called the Service Manager today and told him that I have a 94 Toyota Pickup that HONESTLY shifts smoother and is more pleasurable to drive than my BMW M3...has anyone experienced this? any advice?? I'm taking it to him Friday to Moses BMW in Charleston WV, we will see how they deal with it, if they just shrug it off and tell me there is nothing I can do, and tell me once again it is normal for the M3 because of the "torsional rigidity," they have another thing comin...please help....

is it clunk, clunk!, Clunk!, CLUNK!, or C L U N K !!!! ?

(that was said with only a modicum of sarcasm)

It's hard to tell on a board if what you're experiencing is quantitatively any different from the clunk! all of the rest of us hear. FWIW, my clunk! hasn't gotten any worse.

Well, the answer is that your Service Manager is right. It's normal and all manual M cars do have this clunk. Just think of it as a part of the M experience.

Best regards, south

EDIT: Alright, a CLUNK!!! wouldn't be normal, though.

Typical BMW BS. My 2003 330i has had a valve tick on start like no other E46 the dealership has ever heard. Nontheless, they printed out a Service Bulletin that says that it's "normal." Sure.

All this does is screw our resale value. How can I sell a car that valve ticks for 20 secs when the buyer starts it up? How would you sell a car that clunks when some guy drives it?

One more reason I'm thinking my next car will be a CPO 911.

Oh good....I thought it was just my car too. Only a very might clunk comes from the clutch...kind of reminds me to be gentle on her....

This is correct, BMW has released a service bulletin explaining why this noise occurs SIB 330108 and will not address this, due to the vehicle operating with in design parameters. Hold it wide open and click through the gears and the only thing you can hear is the awesome exhaust note, and feel the smile grow on your face. good luck and have fun with the M.

Well my E46 clunked for 6+ years, still running fine. They even talk about it in the manual on the E92.

IF you wanted a soft, quiet car, an M is not for you.

Zervos4 my friend, I had experienced the EXACT same thing with my M3. A few weeks later, my dif fell off. Now BMW is saying that its not their fault and it was due to road conditions. Check it out: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=160202

All I can say is that having read over a dozen threads on LSD problems and with my current situation of not knowing exactly what fluid my dealership has put into my LSD, I am about ready to tear my hair out! I guess I should be grateful that I'm just being paranoid and am not actually facing any serious issues atm.

Good luck sorting out the sound.
