Another 335i advocate falls prey to the M3

I have a 335i, which has been a terrific car - fast, great handling, smooth, torquey, great fuel economy. But I also have an E36 M3 (now a race car) so I know what the M is about. With a chip, the 335i was breathtakingly quick with minimal lag. As a street car it is terrific.

But Friday I bought an M3!

I've driven several M3s and with each drive I started to get the itch . . . the itch for the V8 bark, the instantaneous throttle response, the rev happy engine, the LSD helping to turn the rear. And the 335i, with its first service, seems to have come back with more turbo lag (much talk about this on the 335i forums). Not sure what they did, but it made the contrast between the cars that much more apparent.

It was gnawing at me, haunting my dreams, and aliating my wife. I needed to do something about it, figure out how to get my fix . . . my dose of M. And today, in exchange for a big check I was given what I needed: the keys to an M3 sedan. After 100 miles of cruising around I know I made the right decision. From the crisper turn-in to the shorter gearing and quicker revs to the awesome sounding engine and linear power delivery, everything seems just right with this car. The feel of the LSD as I roll on the gas in a corner may alone be worth half the price difference. The EDC really works beautifully and transforms the car from overtly sporting to jacked-up and ready to race.

Break in can not come soon enough - 1050 miles remaining.

Congrats. A big decision and big change. I think the more you get to know your new baby the more you will realize some weak points of some of your past praise for the 335i and comparisons with the M3. Get her broken in quickly and safely and then tell us how she does on the track.

M-DCT or not?

Traiter!

J/K.

Congrats.

You weren't away from an ///M car for too long

You know with a chip, the person who bought your 335i will smoke you.

I also owned a tuned 335 which I loved and now belongs to my brother in law. Yesterday, we got together with some friends and did the Vishnu V2 to plug and play V3 conversion, and then took a nice long ride. My friend Karthic who is helping me with my driving skills drove my M3 dct and he informed me I may have cost him $70,000.

I am very happy with my M3 which is my second M car. And though I hate to admit it I do kind of like the incredible amount of attention the M3 garners.

A couple more model years and I'll be trading my 335i for the E92 M3! Can't wait! The LSD, gearing, throttle, handling, design, the 335i can't compare, IMO.

It is Silverstone with black leather. I almost got Jerez with fox red but got overridden by the wife. I still have the 335i for now, but will be selling soon. It is horrible: it's like you go from dating what you think is a really hot chick until you sleep with an even hotter and nastier girl. Suddenly you can't kick the original girl out of bed - ahem - the garage fast enough.

I went with 6 MT based upon some of the trouble folks were having with DCT at the track. Without those issues I was almost evenly split between DCT and MT - the potential of not having the tranny listen to my every wish put me over. I do a lot of track days (although I plan not to do TOO many with the M since I have the E36 M3 race car) and love the MT for both street and track. I picked a car off the lot and took it home that day.

While I still have both cars (and once the M is broken in) I will be able to do some straight line comparisons (not that it matters, since it IS the M factor that makes the car worth so much more).

I will post pics soon!

nice color choice !

i too have a Silverstone w/Black leather interior.... it's a classy color... and yet still looks intimidating. I went with the 6MT as well..... i think the DCT is totally cool, but i like having a little head jerking reaction when i'm alone in the car (and i can adjust for smoother rides with the ladies).

Post pics... and enjoy

Wow, you guys are the picture nazis! No post for you!

I promise to post pics TONIGHT! Wife has the camera right now.

The car has 500 miles already (4 days old) and I am obeying the break in rules while still having some fun. Took her on some great Nor Cal twisty roads (2nd and 3rd gear corners) and was blown away by:

1) How much this car does NOT feel like my 335i (I was obviously high when I took my test drive and wrote that other review)
2) How torquey the V8 is, even <5500 rpm. It is easy to go fast even at those mundane, AMG-like revs.
3) How much front-end grip the car has. I was going pretty hard and never once had an understeer
4) How great the LSD feels: You can feel the power transfer to the outer rear wheel and just slingshot the car out of the corner
5) How neutral the car feels: On power it feels dead neutral and, if anything, it seems like the rear may break first (will need to wait until track day to find out)
6) How great the V8 sounds: at a 1/4 throttle is it pretty subdued, and then you hit it a little harder and you hear the V8 start gobblng air through the left nostril on the hood - awesome intake effect - check it out for yourselves!
7) How much everyone want to race you! - I have owned my 335i for a year, and in 4 days more guys have gawked at the car and/or tried to race me than in that whole year.
8) How crappy the gas mileage is: Managed an honest 20.3 MPG over 120 miles cruising on the highway with traffic (60-80 MPH) and coasting down hills in neutral. Seems to be improving a bit - saw about 22 MPG on computer read out (which is 1 MPG optimistic). Get 14 MPG when pushing it.
9) How fantastic the car looks - They definitely got the looks right on the 4-door - the wheels stuffed under the flared fenders looks bitchin', the side vents and nostrils add a nice touch, and the front air damn looks aggressive
10) How much I love my M! - They nailed it with this car. The integration of the EDC really changes the attitude of the car, the engine is spectacular, the throttle response is what I have been missing the past year, the handling is beyond my expectations (even as the owner of an E36 M3 race car). The car is terrific - and I still haven't exceeded 5500 RPM!

Pics tonight!
