Motorweek: C63 AMG

Watched the Motorweek review of the C63 AMG..

0-60: 5.0 seconds
1/4 mi: 13.2 seconds

Times are pretty slow for the C63 AMG. They even commented that the M3 was faster. I think Motorweek managed a 4.3 0-60 time. Either way this is a good example that track and atmospheric conditions play a factor and you cannot compare vehicles on two seperate days....

Exactly, many of us often loose sight of this. It simply was not an apples to apples test. The Merc is at wost as fast as the M-DCT car and at best a bit faster. Certainly faster than the 6MT. Again, good driver, great launch, everything apples to apples.

The same reasoning needs to be applied to tests where the GT-R laps the N'ring in the 7:2X range and when the 6MT M3 is faster than the M-DCT....

It's a pretty low-traction launch from the looks of it. The 1/4 mile trap speed was 115mph, so the power is there. Perhaps the lack of an LSD hampers the C63 on this particular test track?

Yeah who knows... most of these testers do a set of timed runs and usually post their best time. I imagine it was hot and humid in Michigan (or wherever this test was done) and that played a big factor with the acceleration times.

If you tested a M3 side by side on the same day with the same driver and the same amount of tries, I would imagine you would see a similar drop in expected performance. Or maybe they just tested a lemon C63 AMG that has been beat up too much.

Like I said before, everyone needs to take these performance tests for they are. One test on one day, with a certain driver, and with certain track and atmospheric conditions.

Example, I could take a GTR up to high altitude on a super hot and humid day and do some 0-60 runs and maybe my best time would only be 4.5-5.0 seconds (the thin hot/humid air taking a big chunk of performance from the GTR). Then I take a new M3 DCT to Maryland in February and I am able to get a 4.1 second 0-60 time.... is the M3 truly the faster car in this scenerio?

All good points.

And bottom line: there's no way I'm considering a C63 over a M3. One has a fantastic engine and they have wrought some AMG magic to make the C63 handle as well as it does given that donk; whereas the M3 is designed from day 1 to be a balanced car. Top Gear's track test said all that needed to be said on these two - and conditions were the same, and the same driver, Stig, drove both - case closed

The trap speed is nice, but those would be TERRIBLE times even for a tuned 335i. Something was up. Some have tested the C63 at 3.9 0-60 .

You can only take an equal number of test times for each car and average them out, then you will get the best, most accurate estimate of each car.

I think this topic is the right place to add the experience i made yesterday:

my baby just got his 1200miles services and after 100 more miles of driving i meet a c63amg. The guy behind the wheel was about 20-25years old and pretty cool. gave me a sign to race a bit, so both waited till we arrived a part of the autobahn without a speedlimit.

we tried several 30mph -150mph´s and the results very pretty definite:

the m3 owned the c63 each time after arriving ~ 60-70mph. till this border both cars were pretty equal in acceleration but after it ( i guess he shifted at this line) i just started to pull away (not extrem, but very noticeable ).

such a sweet start for this Ultimate Driving Machine

I doubt that. The C63 pulls away from the M3 easily on the straights. That can be seen in the latest track race in Japan. On every straight, the C63 pulled away from the M3.

Most likely you owned him, because he didn't have a clue in what mode to put his car.

Weather and traction conditions are EVERYTHING to acceleration "times"....also the willingness of the tester to abuse the vehicle over and over again to get the launch just perfect all count......especially for 6MT cars..... this is why I like to look at the 5-60mph times....which is a better real world number for acceleration....car rolling at 5mph in 1st gear....floor it and go.....something anyone should be able to repeat easy... In low torque high strung cars (think high rpm 4 cylinders or turbos) this time might be 1-2 seconds slower....but in cars with broad powerbands its quite close...

I saw this video as well. Yes, the C63 was able to pull on the M3 in the straights every time. Straight-line speed: advantage C63.

However, the M3 was just very consistent on the track, and methodically reeled in the C63 as well as the other cars with rock-solid cornering. The C63finished second, ahead of the IS-F.

The C63 should own the M3 on the straights but there has been occasions where the reverse was true.

http://www.autocar.co.uk/VideosWallp...30&Page=3&CT=V

Unless the C63 drive didn't use all of the throttle there isn't a lot more for him to do in there.

I have raced C63's and they are faster than our Stock M3, not so after chipping!

Talking

When you chip your M3 try racing a C63 tuned by Renntech and see what happens.

Wow, 115MPH trap speed is huge for 13.2 sec quarter! With some sticky tires it'll cover that distance faster.
