What went into your decision?

Hey guys,

What went into your decision between coupe and sedan? I religously read up on message boards, I rarely post, but I have been wondering this for quite some time. I have a buddy who bought the coupe(AW/Black) but he has a new born, I figured the practical route would be to get the sedan, but he says its no big deal and he liked the look of the coupe better. What factors went into your decisions on the type of vehicle you chose? If you had children would the decision have been different? I would really like to hear peoples feedback on this.

Of course if you have kids then getting the sedan should be no brainer if you plan on driving the M3 a lot with your family in it. Otherwise I would get the coupe....

I have 3 kids and getting the coupe.

I know I will never be able to take the whole family at a time. But that is what my wife's van is for. Anyways I never plan on pushing the car to the limits with my family inside so its not like they are going to be missing much. When it comes to them, safety first.

having a back seat is a big improvement over my Z4. With the coupe I can now go places with my 3 boys when my wife is elsewhere.

I choose the coupe since I will be the only one it 99% of the time and didn't what to make and compromises on looks and performance.

My choice will depend on which color I ultimately choose. I feel that some colors look better on the coupe than they do on the sedan, and vice versa. I'd choose the same options regardless of the body style.

I probably would have purchased the sedan but the wait for the dct was more than I was willing to endure. I'm happy, though, because I really do not have much need to haul passengers. I do, however, miss the ease of using the rear seat as an auxilliary trunk and the ease of cleaning the rear seats in the sedan.

The sedan rocks. Even though I'm the only person in the car the majority of the time, having those extra doors is extremely handy whenever you're maneuvering kids, their seats, and their stuff in and out. Plus I've always loved the fact that the M3 can be "practical", and having the four highlights that aspect. In some respects I like the looks of the sedan better; it's more of a sleeper. Whatever performance benefits the coupe has (lower CoG, a few less lbs (I did not get the moonroof)) I'm not likely to miss giving my driving acumen. And then I got to take the money I saved and ship it right back to Germany by getting the stereo upgrade

2 kids was a major factor for me. Getting a 3 y.o. out of the back seat in my coupe is a bit of a PITA.

also, I really like the looks of the sedan.

Coupe cause 2 doors is so much sportier than 4 in my opinion. I don't have any kids so it's a no brainer for me. If I was planning on driving a lot of people around the M3 probably wouldn't even be my choice of car. This car is a toy for me, cruising around for fun in style. I do fill all four seats occasionally and although climbing into the back is a bit of a pain, the people who have been back there say it's really quite comfortable once you get in. I've had a couple of fairly tall people back there at the same time too.

Exactly. While I don't have kids yet, the extra doors will make it a ton easier when I do in the next year or 2.

The coupe does look hot though!

I am only 21 and not planning on kids soon so the coupe was the obvious choice..

Looks and practicality is why I went for the sedan I suppose. I actually like the looks of the sedan a bit more. Seems a bit more properly proportioned. Having 4 doors and a real back seat is a big plus as well. Drive with family to dinner (I have 2 kids), lunches with co-workers, etc.

I bought an E92 because I really don't like the looks of the E90's. M or non-M. Really just boils down to the taillights and the headlights for me.

I have a 1 1/2 year old and a 4 year old which I take to daycare every morning Monday through Friday. For me personally it's worth the bit of extra work to get them in back and buckled in because I prefer the coupe over the sedan enough. Kids also keep getting bigger as well and soon they'll do everything but buckle themselves (4 yo is already there).

I also am planning to keep the car very long term even if I pick up the next iteration of the M3. So I don't want the sedan since I markedly prefer the looks of the coupe personally.

I purchased a coupe in nov 2007 and sold it in feb 2008 as the 4 door was coming out in mar and since I have 2 kids it would make more sense. However when viewing the 4 door in the showrooms here in South Africa i was deeply dissappointed with the rear end and decided to buy another 2 door with MDCT this time round. My wife drives an X5 so its no big deal.

Reason I chose the coupe: Mainly, no kids, never have more than 2 or 3 people in my car at one time, back seat area is the same in the sedan or coupe; trunk area is the same, I use a Thule rack system when i need to(so coupe or sedan doesn't matter) and the look of the coupe was a bit more appealing to me.

Think if I had to haul stuff freuqently, i would go for an SUV, and if I had kids or a reason that the back seats wold be utilized daily; the 4 door makes perfect sense.

Either way, you cant go wrong, both cars are equally practical. I think the really question is, besides looks, do you use the back seats enough that the extra 2 doors are more efficent; if so, then e90.

Never liked E90 sedans since it came out in 2005. Hated the 'girly' looking tail-lights. JUST MY OPINION.

Also, I rarely used the back seats of my old sedan and even when I did use the backseats, people were crammed in it so didn't see the point buying a small sedan.

+1, got no kids and ride by myself majority of the time i.e. Last night was the second time someone was in the back seat and I've had the car for 2 months.
