Exclamation Audi Officially Announce New 3.0 TFSI Supercharged Engine

Today Audi officially announced the new 3.0 TFSI engine, a new high-tech V6 combing Audi's latest state-of-the-art technologies gasoline direct injection and supercharging, which indicates that the T in Audi's engine designation can no longer be solely associated with turbocharged versions. The new unit pumps out 290hp (213 kW) and a quite impressive 420Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque.

Thrust of the compact supercharger, which sits inside the 90-degree V of the cylinder banks in place of the intake manifold, is available from idle speeds because it is belt driven, thus, enabling the unit to produce its maximum 420Nm of torque at just 2500rpm.

We can expect to see figures well under 10 liters per 100km (23.52 mpg) although final figures will vary depending on which model it is deployed in.

Audi is yet to confirm which models are likely to get the new 3.0 TFSI unit, but in line with the leaked engine offensive document we expect it to make its debut in the Audi A6 Facelift which will be released later this year and we should also see a tuned version make its way into the new S4 replacing its current 350hp V8 unit.

Damn....I would still prefer turbo over supercharger but O well, I am curious about how it will perform

And HKS, what was your source>?

Most of the articles are sourced from worldcarfans.com. Its a great site, arguably my favorite for finding info, although edmunds insideline is equally as good imo.

What is the official power for the S4, some are saying 350hp while others are talking 333hp, the only thing both are in agreement with is the amount of torque at 420Nm.

I too like turbos but I think if the SC is executed correctly it will be the better engine, with power on demand more readily and just as strong of torque surge right the way through the rev range.

I think you are looking at a car that will be both quicker and have a sweetier power delivery than the very impressive 335i. I wonder how it's handling will change over the S5 with it's slightly heavier and longer engine which will be hanging slightly more out ahead of the front axle. This could be a good low key players to surprise a few people.

I just don't like the sound of superchargers in comparison to turbos...

Whatever the output is, it'll have to be quite a bit in order to match the 3's acceleration numbers. It's quite the porker.

I want this car to be good though.

I match your skepticism as I too have only experience with turbo unit and none with superchargers but the figures speak for themselves, 350hp and 310ft/lbs is more than what the 335i has and then the S4 will also be offered with DSG which also has proven gains in acceleration.

With this combination of more power and dual clutch will make the S4 quicker if only slightly so. Then there is the handling, the A4 has better weight balance than the A5, with a shorter engine in the S4 than S5 it should handling even better and we all know that the 335i and S5 have almost identical times on each of the tracks tested which should mean the S4 is a little quicker again than both of them.

So Audi yet again can't build an engine that has more than 100 hp to the liter, even with a turbo... oh well

BMW didnt do it eaither... even with the turbo. Last I checked the 335 is a 3.3L engine with 300bhp. Atleast the S4 will have over 330BHP for the 3.0T.

The 335I is a 3.0L.

I have to laugh at that kind of statement as if producing 100hp/ltr is the most important thing and proves your engineering skill.

What really shows skill is to make an engine which ticks all the boxes, is powerful, is potent throughout the entire rev range and yet is economical. The new M3 is that type of engine, the same for the 335i but neither match the RS6 engine, it's truly incredible when you consider it's got so much power over it's rivals yet is far more economical and has better enviromential figures. Whether the S4 engine follows the same character is not known yet but I wouldn't be surprised to see the engine far exceeding the 335i engine's abilities.

To me forced induction is the way forward, it's the only way to get all three important points of a good engine. Top end power doesn't really have a place anymore in today's current climate and I reckon you will see M cars making the switch to one or other IF option in the near future.

Lets check how many times you are wrong with your statement:

1. RS4/ R8 produce 420hp from an NA 4.2 liter V8
2. The 2.0T in the old A4 had 200hp and the new version has 210hp.
3. The RS6 has 570 hp from a 5.2 liter V10
4. The old RS6 has 450hp from a 4.2 liter V8

To me it seems like Audi has produced 4 engines with over 100hp per liter, 3 of which engines are currently produced. Keep goin with your logic though, fanboy.

Edit: the B8 S4 will produce at least 350hp from a 3.0 liter SC engine

Can I add

TT Mk1 225hp from 1.8L
Golf GT 170hp from 1.4L
RS4 Mk1 380hp from 2.65L
RS2 315hp from 2.2L

That means percentage wise Audi and VW have produced more 100hp/ltr engines than BMW.

And don't forget the new Audi S3, which produces 265hp from 2.0l (and usually dyno @ over 280hp!).

LOL, OK, I didn't want to start a flame war...

For me, a good engine is one that has at least 100 hp to the liter naturally aspirated... if it doesn't something must be wrong, like Mercedes' engines, 6.3 L with like 400 HP... why have such a large displacement? Torque or what?

If you're adding a turbo, I expect to see north of 150 hp/liter. So like EVOs... sure, you can point out the stocker which has like 300 hp, but in England, you've got the FQs which go from 320 to 400 hp, stock, from the factory...

Two things:
2.0T in the old A4 had 200hp and the new version has 210hp - OK, so Honda has 200 HP from a 2.0 in the Type R (with almighty VTEC, yo), with the difference being much less torque on the Honda, but OK...

The RS6 has 570 hp from a 5.2 liter V10 - ya, but with 2 turbos? So it does have a lot of torque...

And a good engine? 335i could use more power, I like the 360 or so you get from a "safe" tune on the V2/V3... Other than that, an engine I really like is the N/A unit in the GT3 RS... 415 HP from 3.6 L? Not bad IMO...

Fanboy? No... I just "hate" Audi. I feel their cars are too boring, too front-heavy, and far from being nimble, with quattro being more of a safety attribute than a "go faster" thing like it is on Evos, Imprezas, Porsche, etc...

The RS6 is not producing 570bhp. That is the official underrated figure. It is actually closer to 600bhp, but even if we look at the underrated figure here's how Audi's V10 looks:

BMW X6 4.4 V8TT = 96hp/l
BMW 335i 3.0 I6TT = 100hp/l
Saleen S7 7.0 V8TT = 107hp/l
Audi RS6 5.0 V10TT = 114hp/l
Bugatti Veyron 8.0 W16TTTT = 125hp/l

So as you can see the hp/l for the RS6 is fine. The only cars that achieve more are the 911 turbo, GT-R, Veyron etc. But even the most you are getting there is 133hp/l with the 911.

Also, dont forget the RS6 is more powerful AND efficient than it's rivals.

Congrats for posting the most inexperienced narrow-minded BMW propaganda comments of the year. Horsepower is great for racing but is generally agree to be useless compared to torque when it's normal driving which everyone of us does 99% of the time.

You may feel that you would prefer an engine with 100hp/ltr but only make 60ft/lbs from that same litre but I bet the majority of people would feel happier with less power and more torque. I think your lack of experience with hi-performance diesels is clouding your judgement but if you had sampled a 335d you would see and feel the important of torque.

Any car company can make a 100 hp/liter engine. They just have to have a short stroke engine with high RPM. However, high RPM is not very efficient nor as reliable as a lower RPM bigger volume engine. I think a better measure of a good engine is how efficiently it makes that power. Maybe in the future, besides just seeing HP and torque figures, we might have an "efficiency" curve that shows what % of energy is utilized for work instead of wasted heat.

Shoot, even my piddly RC car engine which is only 4.0 cc (that's .004 liter) makes about 3 horsepower. That's like 750 hp/liter! Of course, it's running at 40,000 rpm!

Audi's are improving day by day bro. Even if they are nose heavy or non-nimble, they are improving their handling limits all the time. In this matter, they are like Porsche ......no one approved Porsche's rear engine designation but they stuck with it and improved it to quite a extend. The same way Audi is stuck with quattro and nose heavy designs trying to make it better rather then ditching the design. And in my opinion, they are going the right way. Sure, I would like a RWD Audi for tail spinning fun but quattro ain't so bad.
