The sharp rise in gas prices is not confined to the US. I took a look at the Weekly Retail Premium Gasoline Prices (Including Taxes) and it shows that the rise as been uniform across the countries tracked.

From Jan 2001 to June 08, the prices ($US) have increased as shown below:

Belgium: $3.47 to $9.20

France: $3.58 to $8.80

Germany: $3.55 to $8.93

Italy: $3.74 to $8.93

Netherlands: $4.02 to $9.89



US: $1.61 to $4.20

A rise of about 250% across the board except for the Brits who only saw a 200% increase.

One small thing you forgot to mention is that they pay for gas in EUROS (in Europe) and their salary increases are also in % of Euros --> They are making WAY, way more today than in 2001. We're opposite today as the Dollar is worthless... I doubt they calculate their salaries in $, then translate to Euros...

January 2001: 1 EURO = $0.94
Today 1 EURO = $1.56

January 2001: 1 UKP = $1.48
Today 1 UKP = $1.97


Now, to recalculate in money we all pay in:

Belgium: E3.69 to E5.90

France: E3.80 to E5.64

Germany: E3.78 to E5.72

Italy: E3.98 to E5.72

Netherlands: E4.27 to E6.34

UK: UKP2.99 to UKP4.44

US: $1.61 to $4.20

And the largest increase (that matters to a living person in each of those countries) is...
