M3 vs 997 TT

Yesterday I had a meet with a bunch of fellow board members and what one of them said is still stuck in my head:

"The new M3 will beat the 997 TT on the track because AWD understeers."

What are your thoughts?

The new 997tt does not understeer anywhere near as much as the old model and it hardly understeered either.

To think that the new M3 is that quicker, well someone did not his logical head on that day.

I'm sure there are other examples, but at the 'Ring, the Porsche has gone a best of 7:49 with standard PS2 sneakers, and a 7:40 with the optional Pilot Sport Cups. This was with their resident assassin on board, Walter Rohrl.

The M3 has done an 8:05 with PSC plus sneakers (supposedly more aggressive than PS2s and less aggressive than PSCs, although I'm personally not sure), but with SportAuto's Horst whatshisname aboard. Horst is more a journeyman than a cockpit assassin, so maybe a cockpit assassin would do an 8:05 on the stock PS2s (standard in the States).

In any event, the Porsche TT and M3 are not competitors, either in price or performance. The 997S, Z51 Vette and M3 are quite close in performance, though - the Porsche and Vette having done 7:59s at the 'Ring while stock, but with cockpit assassins on board.

btw, if you haven't heard.

M3 will be Veyron in a straight line because Veyron is heavier.

Actually it will KILL open wheel F1 cars - fenders help with aerodynamics.

This is all relative........ can the M3 beat a 997TT around a given autocross or racetrack...sure...but why....THE DRIVER......

Go to a Drivers Education (DE) event....you will see guys with wicked rides...getting smoked by miatas around the track (ask me how I know)....since it takes a while to learn the track and the capabilities of your car..... In my 20 year old bone stock 928 I have no problems keeping up with or passing far "faster" newer sports cars (M3's, 911's, Vettes, etc) & I'm still a novice at track driving...... Sure they get away a little bit on the straights...but they get caught under braking and in the corners!!

I figure I will instantly gain 10 seconds a lap in my M3 vs the 928.....with more seat time and R compound tires I could gain 20 seconds in the M3

I don´t think the E90s M3 will beat the 997 on track even with a “not so good driver” unless he really is a stump!! Hahaha!!! I´ve track driven both cars and the 997 will simply blow the M3 on straight even if Grandma is driving, that would have to make you a real Hamilton to catch up to the 997 on the bends.

i m a great porsche fan, but i dont think that the TT( TipTronic?) will beat the M3.
Also the handshifted C2 wont beat the m3. Just the carrera S and "stronger" cars ( 4S, turbo, GT3 GT2 GT).
i base my statement on the laptimes of these cars.
The carreraS and m3 are very close at the moment, i think, but with the facelift it will beat the m3 with some advantage.

The M3 is not a true track car, it's whole set up is best suited to fun which is great, especially if the occasional trackday is your kind of thing. The 997 may be quicker in face-lift form but it too requires real skill to achieve a decent lap time, more so than the M3. Of the two I would place my money on the M3 unless both cars in the hands of a capable drivers at which point I would switch my bet.

Bahahahaha!! I thought he meant 997 TT as in twin turbo as it is generally applied. Not tip tronic. I change my mind and everything I wrote before if this is the case.
