Help me convince my wife that I NEED an M3

Alright...having wandered around this site for a while in recon mode I've gathered a lot of really good information and subsequently have decided that it's time to ditch the old zhp and replace it with an e90 M3...

However, I'm not sure the wife agrees with my assessment of the facts, so I'm asking for your help since clearly you guys are the most knowledgeable (flattery probably won't work on her either) about the subject matter.

So please help me by posting your best rational (...er maybe not for the M3..but you get the point) argument for why one needs an M3.

And since any responses to this thread have at least a 50% chance of being something along the lines of questioning my manhood for seeking the wife's input I'll just come out and say that those of us married guys should completely understand that even an M3 can be ruined when you have to hear, "Honey...I can't believe you spent $6X,XXX on an F'n Car" whenever you ride together anywhere...

Besides even flaming me for being whipped is a more enjoyable read then the 100th MDCT vs. MT post...

This is a tall order. Personally, before I got married to my wife I made a deal that if I stayed in NJ I'd get to pick a dream car (just one). I wanted to move to California so this was the compromise.

But for you, I don't know because I don't know you. But if you work hard you should get to play hard.

how do I lose? I don't get it. I actually ended up being better off here. I'm 4 miles from my job, my family is in the next town over, and I get to drive a sweet car.

haha! you have excellent points (especially the last one). But if I moved to CA I certainly would not have been able to afford an M especially with rising gas prices. So, bad weather be damned, I will still have an M

ok...so next time I want to move out of state and need to find a compromise I can work it...

And yes...I've tried talking to her but my arguments tend to be along the lines..."Dear...you'll just love the flexibility the EDC offers on different surfaces...blah blah blah"...

I like the test drive...what I need is an emotional sell and that may be the ticket. Plus I suppose I'd rather deal with the problem of her wanting to drive it all the time than complaining about it. But of course then she can't drive a manual and the dealer doesn't have any DCTs on the lot...

Honestly, buy her matching Jimmy Choo shoes and a purse, she'll be over the clouds after you get her that. Right after you do that, buy the car the next day. Whenever I want to bribe my gf, I make a trip to Jimmy Choo.

My wife has a 745li. She wasn't that excited about my new M3 coupe, till she rode in it then drove it. She was very suprised how smooth it rode and how fast it is. Now she is glad I got my new toy. Of course she is #1 on the new 7 series list for Christmas 08delivery in Dallas.

Threaten to have an affair (if you are not already having one)...

Seriously, tell her life's too short and finite, and this is one thing you really would like to do when you are at the age you are at (this line can work for any age really), and that if you don't do this, you'll most likely regret not having done it later. If she cares about you, she should go along with that unless you have starving children who need to be fed.

Here are a few I have used:

1) A car isn't just a means of transportation for me, it's also a hobby (ie track days etc...) This plays especially well if you aren't involved in other expensive hobbies. For Example: I don't golf three times a week like all my friends.

2) You are being completely practical, instead of buying a third sports car you are buying one that can be an everyday driver and fulfill the sports car need. I can play this up because I sold by Boxster.

3) Last Resort: Negotiate what a fair car payment would be for a car she believes is less excessive. Calculate the difference between the 'fair' payment and the M3 payment and she gets the equivalent amount for clothes.

Good Luck.

You should work it in slowly. Tell her everyday how badly you like this car. Slowly tell her how hard you been working. Keep on telling her over and over about the car. Even if she says no don't give up. She will give in.

If you are responsible with your finances -meaning, you can afford the car and the family savings/expenses- then you should buy whatever you want without any issues with your wife, as you and her should be in sync with this type of "needs" by now, IMO. It is after all a two-way street... what works for you should work for her, and viceversa.

If that is difficult for you or for her to understand/deal with then you should be worry about something deeper and more urgent than an M3.

Thanks a million for the write-up. I've tried the hobby thing (so true) and am actually gaining some traction...

Also -she loved the clothes idea...

this may actually happen...

Here's what I did:

1) Assure her that you can afford it. Who care's if you retire with "only" 6 million in the bank instead of 7 or 8. Sometimes you gotta reward yourself.

2) Let her drive one. They tend to "get it" after the drive.

3) Promise her to pick up the dog poop in the back yard.

4) Sign up for dance lessons.

5) Promise her that you'll "shag" her more often.

7) Sign a contract promising points 3,4 & 5 with the consequences being that she would become the primary driver of the vehicle.

It worked for me.

Such the psychologist...relax.

Money is not an issue but I think it's important to get what you want but also fit the needs of your partnership and mutually agree... if she wants to buy a midget porno because she can afford it I may object because it's excessive (bad example but you get the point)...
