Pay the man his money if in fact you haven't. He may have wife, gf, kids, pets, or all to take care of.

Pay him. Remember "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".
"Not a sermon, just a thought".

good conscious is not a bad thing at all to have.
1 year plus 3% interests you owe him ~ $515. You're still saving $15.
And don't give him that money with a grunt be as nice as possible, apologize and show him you're an honnest person you'll get some perks later. This is a no brainer.

So I brought a check for 19,500 when I picked up the car because I wanted to put 20,000 down. Now a month later he's saying that he made a mistake and I never left a deposit so he needs a credit card from me to pay him 500.00. Bear in mind that I have the signed contract that says that I left a 500.00 deposit. I've already made my first monthly payment on the finance. Now I'm pretty sure that I'm under no legal obligation to pay him but I dont want to be too much of a scumbag. He's called me 3 times a day for the last 3 days and left me kind of angry messages that he wants a call back to resolve this. What would you guys do?
Let me get this straight... you know that you did not pay the $500.00 -as obviously, according to you, you just played along with the impression that you did- and now that the dealer is asking for the actual payment you don't know what to do?

Is this a sequel of the "playing along"?

See if my dealer called and said something like that a month later I would probably not pay them. I got fucked on my trade-in tho. The way I see it they still got a very good deal. I think the sales guy is rude to call and bug you A MONTH after the sale for 500 bucks. 500 fuckin dollars is he serious? His ignorance is at fault here. Everyone in here talks about morals and ethics but dealerships are the slimiest people ever! And yes I would give a complete stranger his wallet back with all of his money in it without giving it a second thought. If it were a car salesmans wallet thats a different story. I hope I hope my dealership calls me and says I owe them 500 bucks. I will laugh them off the phone.

pay him, and be polite...make a joke about it and tell him he 'owes you one'

on a side note...I'm note sure I'd sign a legal contract I know to be incorrect...

Sounds like you know that you didn't give it to him...

so although you could probably legally get away with not paying it...come on...

You know when you go somewhere like the DMV or court or anything government related...and that guy behind the counter tells you that you can't get that thing done that you went there for? And drove the distance, found the parking, took off from work, etc. only to find that you have to come back som other day because they wouldn't overlook some meaningless technicality?

Don't be that guy...

Are you serious?
Why do you hate salespeople or dealerships so much? A lot of people on this forum have good relationships with the client and sales advisors, you seem to have a different experience. But if you truly have that kind of attitude against all dealers, you have some issues. They are people doing their job, and some are overly kind.

You need some rethinking.

As a lawschool student, by law you have to pay him. Although they would not litigate against you for $500, because litigation would be more expensive. Just pay the $500, as people have said, what goes around come around.

The reason that you have to pay him, is that your oral conversation about the deposit is a legally binding contract. If you know that the dealer made a mistake, you are not allowed to jump on that mistake. Therefore, just pay him the money.

Its just the right thing to do.

Best Regards.

You are only as good as your word.
If you indeed paid the $500 - bring proof and show them. Should clear it up.

If you didn't pay the $500 - and the deal was that you should have, or that you "did" - you need to keep your word and pay it.

Wow, Ryan. You've managed to get me to post for the first time. I was really impressed with the number of good honest folks out there and figured it must be that owning a BMW M is a pretty good filter.

Apparently that's not true for everyone.

There is absolutely no question what the right thing to do here is. If a friend of mine did what you are suggesting, I'd stop being friends with him. Period. It is THAT black and white.

If you paid it and can prove it, prove it to him. End of story.

If you didn't pay it, don't be a scumbag.
