The features are all essentially the same so what it really comes down to is personal preference. See what feels better in your hand because you will obviously be holding this camera for quite some time. You dont want something uncomfortable
Also, if you have ever used a canon before, the interface will be very familiar to you on the XTI. Same with Nikon so if you like are familiar with a certain interface or you dislike a certain interface, that could sway you one way or the other. |

This question has been asked many times. Here's a copy/paste of a previous response....
----------- It's all about the fit in your hand. The price of the XSi is rather steep for an entry level, I'd compare it to the Nikon D80. Go to a good store, play with both Canon's, and try out the Nikon D40x and D80 while you are there. What feels more natural to you? The camera should be an extension of your hand, so it needs to be comfortable and somewhat intuitive. It's only a light-tight box with a hole in it. What matters is the skill of the person holding the camera. ------------------------- There are a lot of really good threads on this topic (one camera vs. another) Here are a bunch of replies I've posted, maybe they'll help... http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...8&postcount=26 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...8&postcount=29 and check out this entire thread. It's worth reading at least the first couple pages... http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94255 -------------------- Remember, the brand is meaningless. Canon or Nikon, both are outstanding. Try them, see which is more natural and comfortable.

Both cameras are built for beginners, the D40 lacks many functions compared to its D80 counterpart. IMO if I ever shoot film I Always use my Nikkormat, but as far as Digital, Canon is you're best bet.

i have a nikon d40...
i love it! easy to use and really light.. it's a great beginners camera... but all in all it's basically your preference. the reason why i chose the d40 is because it felt more comfortable in my hands. |

No Comparison if you do D40 and XTi
more like D40x vs XTi I would ultimately pick XTi over D40 and D40x the XTi is a really good camera for those who know what they are doing and those who are new to DSLR photography that's just my .02

I bought a D40 once and it was good. But I didn't like the lack of options for focus points. The D80 had more so I ended up getting that. But since you're asking D40 or Xti... I may choose Xti for options!

i think the only major advantage canon has over nikon is the mfg process. they dont seem to have lens shortages like Nikon does.
the popularity of Nikkor lenses speaks for itself.. if you think you want to build your collection of excellent glass - go nikon - but be prepared for premium prices and long waits. Canon has excellent cameras and lenses as well - easier to find/buy. arguably not quite as good as nikkor - but most of us will never be able to tell. i always opt for canon point and shoots and nikon dslrs.. but that's becuase i made the dslr choice a number of years back and am too far invested in lenses to ever switch. hope this helps you understand the two better |

Nikon keeps their supply tight on purpose. I don't like it or agree with it, but that's life.
