Official Speed Cloth Interior Thread

These are the ZCP cloth seats. TC Kline has these in his E46 ZCP car.

TC is great. I think his new AW E92 has one option -- Aluminum trim.
Well, that and a bunch of his suspension goodies.

Forgive me if this is obvious. People haven't really mentioned that the speed cloth doesn't exist just to be a cheap alternative to leather.

It has more friction than leather so it prevents sliding around in the seats at high speeds.

True, but I think another solution would be carbon leather seats (or at least center sections), and then you would not have the "cheap factor".

Seriously though, I do see your point. In fact people have brought that up in other threads. I am leaning toward the cloth seats myself. But now that I think about it, I would be curious to see what carbon leather seats/seating-surfaces would look like, heh.

Isnt it lighter also?

But i think most people just care for a luxury and a not cheap looking interior...

compared both allready in nature next to each other( one car on the lot, the other in the show room) and decided for leather, it looks so much better (and is worth 2100€)

+1 Even if it is lighter (and I doubt that would be at all significant), I much prefer leather. There are some things I simply will not let go. This is one of them.

I thought about that as well...plus you could have the little benefits of the premium package (garage door opener and mirror stuff).

I figured that you could probably order the leather pieces for the doors and have them replaced, just like other members have ordered extended leather pieces for the center console. I might try that route once I finally get my car.

NO...those are the ZCP alcantara seats. There is a difference (..despite both fabrics "technically" being made of cloth). Look back at my post on page 3; those are the cloth seats in my ZCP. I had the choice to get the alcantara, but I decided against it for two reasons:

• Durability: I wear BMW ///M gloves as it is just to keep the alcantara on my steering wheel looking new (..and free of mat). Take a look at the friction zones on the alcantara seats pictured above. They start to look faded & worn over time. My cloth seats show no signs of wear.
• Design: The style aspects of the alcantara seats reminded me of the designs commonly found in passenger planes.

The alcantara does feel nice though (..similar to suede).

They were available w/ the ZCP package in the U.S., although the car pictured above does not have a ZCP steering wheel nor the ZCP trip. Chances are that the individual above changed the interior (..less likely) or changed the steering wheel and ordered different trim (..more likely). Our ZCP steering wheels aren't leather wrapped, don't have volume, phone, etc. buttons; only an M button.

I am not saying it looks bad but I rather spend the extra $950 to get full leather seats (not extended leather). I think it worths the money compare to my gf's handbag, at least it has more leather.

So you revived a 3-month thread to tell everyone that you don't like speed cloth?

I really like the way it felt. It was nice and grippy. It felt like it would hold the driver well in corners.

Actually the doors (arm rests, the panel is cloth) are still leather they are just not stitched like the leather interior cars. That is the arm rests... the fabric on the door is actually very nice looking IRL. The lack of stitching is the only downside...

So far I am loving my Speed Cloth! Lots of compliments from those that have seen it in person!

Right, yes, I should have been more clear. I was talking about the cloth around the door handle and speaker. I agree it looks good too. I think I might slightly prefer an all-leather door, but it is not a major thing at all.

I do love the Speed Cloth and this is one thing I will really miss out on if (when?) I decide to go with a leftover '08 (which I am very close to doing).

My IB E46 ///M3 had cloth/leather, and I enjoyed it more than the full leather interior of my previous BMW's.

I am going to order a 2009 with Speed cloth. I saw an IB with speed cloth at the track last month. It was awesome.

Anyhow, can I still get heated seats with speed cloth? The BMw configurator says I can, but I don't trust it.

I will not try to convince people who have seen the speed cloth in reality (or anybody for that purpose), but IMO:

- the speed cloth really looks sporty
- the feel is great (not sliding, not cold in the winter and not too hot in the Summer)
- makes the car a little unique since few will take this standard equipment
- is cheaper
- and will be more resistant over time (at least I hope so but I will admit that this is pure speculation at this point !! )
