VIDEO: CGI be damned! Inside the BMW M3's V8

Quote:

Ever since Industrial Light and Magic dropped Jurassic Park onto the scene, it's rare to see a movie, TV show or advertisement that doesn't involve some form of CGI. It's amazing what can be done by a handful of programmers and a case of RedBull, but something gets lost in translation when computerized effects are used in place of their analog forbearers. The advertising firm IdeaCity recognized this and melded high-tech wizardry with old-school filmmaking to create an absolutely beautiful ad for BMW's new M3.

The edifice for the spot began with a tour of BMW's M facility in Munich, where the IdeaCity crew studied the inner workings of the M3's 4.0-liter V8. They had three complete engines shipped out to Belgium, where manifolds were cut, cylinders were shaved and lighting holes were drilled to mount special cameras, lenses and lights. After two weeks of intensive study and preparation, the team took another four, 20-hour days to film what happens inside the 420 hp mill during a single revolution. The completed spot was filmed at 10,000 frames-per-second and doesn't utilize any form of computer-generated effects. We've already watched it a half a dozen times and we think you'll do the same.

Consider this :

Audi released the RS4 in 2006 with a 8250 RPM red line

BMW releases their M3 two years later with a 8300 red line and makes sure everyone and their brother knows this.

then someone will say yes but the M3 has flatter torque up to 8300 RPM

Not so fast:

m3: Pmax = 420 hp at 8300 RPM at which point torque is:
T = P / 8300 * 5252 = 276 lb.ft (the BMW M3 torque curve reads this same result)
At 8300 RPM the RS4 torque is only ~250 lb.ft

However
RS4: Pmax = 420 hp at 7500 RPM
first let's see the torque at 7500 RPM:
T = P / 7500 *5252 = 294 lbs.ft
At 7500 from the M3 torque curve shows only 280 lbs.ft

There is no clear advantage to either car either way. It will depend a lot on the track layout. Assuming the driver exploits each car to its full potential I can see how on one circuit the RS4 will dominate and on another it could be the M3. Besides there is more differences in the drive trains

On mileage BMW M3 specs are:

city: 17.9 l/100 km which is 13.12 mpg ( the RS4 spec is 14 mpg)
highway: 9.2l/100 km which is 25.5 mpg ( the RS4 spec is 21 mpg)

Now that should make M3 owners feel better at least.

Its been stated in many tests comparing the RS4 and M3 that the BMW V8 is a true masterpiece and its been often compared to the likes of the best ferrari V8s. Its been discussed in numerous threads here how the Audi is a brilliant car and the company has come a long way but the M3 has a better engine full stop and I dont care much about your torque calculations!

This is a thread about the video inside the M3 engine. Where are you?

If you are going to hate, be sure to get your facts right. Redline is 8400rpm.

Anyway, back on topic. Cool vid!

Forgot about the tiny weight difference of 100+ kg?

Best regards, south

Ok I am wrong M3 redline is 8400 rpm. Still that is only a 150 RPM difference with the RS4. I am still unconvinced it is that much of an achievement.
Epacy, The only sentence in the video is about the red line. I think I am spot on the subject. did not mean to spoil the magic though.
BTW at a 12:1 compression ratio detonation does not look orange it looks white. Nobody verified it (obviously) but the wavelength (color) can be derived from physics knowing pressure, temperature and nature and proportions of the combustible and comburant in the themodynamical reaction.

Nice video - too bad it's not a longer commercial spot.

BTW, Oneginee, nobody really cares about the exact wavelength of light emitted from the detonation.

Stop with the approximations and calculations. The M3 is rated at a peak torque of 295 ft lb and more importantly provides a very large percentage of that torque over a incredibly broad range. The torque curve is flatter and broader than the RS4. Both engines are without a doubt fantastic and the RS4 engine was even more revolutionary at its time. However, by all accounts, and as others have posted, this RS4 engine has been outdone by the M3 engine.

According to the BMW website...this is not CGI, but rather shots of the actual engine at 4,000 frames per second. There is a "Making of the video" video that explains how they did it.
