Nonsmoker conversion

I've moved the following from the General forum, and updated the parts required to eliminate the ashtrays and install storage cubbies in their places.

For those who need 12v the plug has been moved under the armrest.
The front tray is perfect for a pair of sunglasses.

I'd have no doubts about removing the smoker option, unless you really need that 12v up front and like to clutter up your car with ugly wires.
Here is the part needed to convert the front:

8 Spectacles tray (comes w/ part 9) - 51 16 7 132 376

12V outlet for center console (or reuse one from front ashtray):

11 Plug-in socket with plug - 61 34 6 947 184
16 Stopper plug-in socket - 51 16 7 135 141

And the rear (just pop out the ashtray insert and put in the bottom mat, no need to replace whole part 5. However, if 3 is not available, you can get 5 and use the bottom mat from it) :

3 Floor mat velours - 51 16 6 960 687

The image is the coupe, right? Is it the same parts for the sedan?

For the front & center console, I believe so, but am not 100% certain. Of course, the sedan does not have the rear console.

The spectacles tray came with the bottom half of the lid, but not the top part with the chrome strip -- the part you actually see. Am I supposed to take it off the ashtray housing and reuse?

Yes, I believe so. I have not done the install myself, though, so not sure of exact removal method. Looks like there are some tabs and slots in the two pieces.

Yeah, looks like. Thanks. I'll give it a go this weekend.

Anyone done this yet? I bought the actual tray piece but it looks like I either need to buy the cover section for the top or reuse (if possible) the one from the ashtray cover. Please tell me that I don't have to remove any of the console to get this swapped out.

I'll do it this weekend. You need to resuse the cover trim, or get new. For the front, you will need to pop the console cover off. Shouldn't be too hard, but when I do it I will post info.

I did this conversion on my E90 335i a few months ago using the instructions from E90post. You do have to pop off your ashtray cover and reuse it. This isn't that hard, but you must be very, very careful removing the ashtray cover. Overall, it's a pretty easy job.

I plan to remove the sunglass tray from my 335i and reinstall it on my M3 when it arrives. It's actually one of my favorite features in this car.

Good luck!

BTW, has anyone here actually installed the sunglass holder in an M3? Since the console has the pwr/EDC/DSC buttons, I wonder if there are any additional complications with removing the console top?

It was not difficult, just one plug for the Power/EDC/DSC.

Additional note

I finally did the front today. Note that you do lose the subtle LED illumination that the stock ashtray has. The sunglass compartment has no illumination.

Edit: Or maybe not! I have an idea. Back later

Greg, if you can post a good few pics of you doing the conversion and also moving the 12v socket to the back, I will put a bumper sticker of your name on the Popemobile. I swear.

Squeeze the white tabs on each side of the plug and pull.

I pulled REALLY hard on the center console but couldn't get it to come off... didn't feel comfortable trying any harder for fear that I'd break something. How hard did you guys have to pull?
