Polarized glasses + iDrive display = no go

Forgot to add this to my observations yesterday. The iDrive display on my 335 worked like a champ with my polarized Ray Bans... not so much on the M3. It's got splotches of dark on the left and right. I'm thinking this isn't a manufacturing defect, but rather I just got really lucky with the 335.

Tilt your head slightly. I know it's not really a solution, but it works until you get new glasses. In my 335 I could never read the radio (no iDrive) without doing this.

that's strange - my poloarized ray bans gave me the same problem on myE46 M3 navi - but i can read my idrive with the same glasses fine.

guess the lcd is set at 90 degrees compared to the lcd on the e46.. (had to tilt my head to read the older one)

maybe there's a slight variance between screens.

Tried my own suggestion and it doesn't work worth a shit. It actually made it worse, only worked in the 335i. Sorry for the false info.

There's little difference if any. I think the difference is that the M3s were fitted with iDrives that just happen to use an LCD from a different supplier - but that's just a guess.

Mine sucks. Splotchy dark spots here and there. They move around when you tilt your head. Very annoying

Yeah, that's what I figure as well. Same symptom here.

This is pretty common on quite a few cars, though doesn't seem to be a problem on my Mercedes. It's slightly annoying but not terrible.

my eye doc hopefully will let me wear contacts again today... crossing fingers, so i'll try my glasses and see how it is.. sounds weird. maybe gotta play with the contrast and other settings for the display to get something more legible

It's not that bad for me. Some parts of it are dark, and others aren't. It's a lot better than the LCD on the E46.

bringing this back from the dead since I can't find anything recent on this...

Is this still an issue with the newer M3 iDrive displays? I have an '11 on the way and it bugged me enough that I'll skip the polarized glasses if it is still an issue. My non-iDrive 08 335i console had major issues with polarized glasses.

It's not a problem on my 2010. I can't imagine the 2011s being worse.

No problems here but I'm short (5'-5") so I'm close to looking dead on at the screen. I can imagine if I was taller and looking at the screen at a down angle it would be pretty bad.

I have no problem looking at the iDrive while wearing my polarized Oakleys. My M3's a 2010.

GG I actually just ordered a set of sunglasses with polarized lens a few days ago. I guess I won't be using them inside the car

Same here. No issues at all with any of my polarized Oakley's (I've worn 4 different pairs so far) and 2011 nav.
