How to install Iphone cradle
You can save your self a lot of cash if you do the install your self. It is VERY easy to install.
First you will need to order the following part numbers: Base Plate 84 21 6 946 075 MSRP $130.00 Console Trim 51 16 7 118 054 MSRP $24.00 Apple iPhone Snap in Adapter 84 10 9 182 792 MSRP $140 1.) Once you have these parts you will need to open the Armrest console and remove the rubber cover on the right side where the phone cradle goes. 2.) Remove the protective cover the Base Plate comes with. (There is a black cover that covers the entire Base Platt so that if it is pre-installed in the car you will not damage the plug that the cradle plugs into) It is slid out with clips. 3.) Fish the connection wires of the Base Plate through the Consol Trim and snap them together. 4.) Remove the E-break boot 5.) Locate the plugs just under the E-break. 6.) Fish the connection wires from the BasePlat/ Console Trim through the hole of the arm rest box that leads to the E-break area. 7.) Connect both wires (antenna & Charger) into the factory plugs located under the E-break handle boot. 8.) Snap the Base Plat/ Console Trim into the armrest box to secure. 9.) Snap in the Apple iPhone Snap in Adapter And you should be done. I have heard that they might be a software update for these cradles but I have no idea exactly what they offer. I contacted my Service advisor when I went in for a 1200 mile service but he has not heard of any software updates for that. From what my service advisor told me the cradle is strictly an antenna amp and a charger. Although I asking him to look into it for me he I will update this install if he find any information that I have not mentioned here. this proccess will save you 1.5 hours of BMW install time and figure at a rate of $80+ I think their actual rate is $120/hr your looking at a nice savings

haha actually yes. I dont have a good camera and I find my self getting so into my installs that I forget to step back and just take a look at what I am doing. I will see about taking some photo's this week of it installed and the locations of wires and where they go.

The only problem with the iPhone cradle is that it prevents you from using it with the ipod interface, 6FL, which is a shame.
6FL also charges the phone .. so really, the cradle only gives you one feature (if you dont already own 6FL) ... and that is connecting your phone with the external sharkfin antenna. BMW needs to redesign the cradle so it can be used with 6FL as well as BT. I would imagine its really quite a easy thing to do ... but who knows ! |

iPhone damage
I have the BMW iPhone cradle fitted in my '08 335d coupe.
I have had the iPhone since September '07 but approx 1 month after using the cradle, since April '08, my iPhone is unable to pick up a network signal at all. I suspect the cradle may have damaged the antenna somehow. I believe the black plastic piece of the iPhone is the antenna and think the way the iPhone attaches to the cradle may have crippled my phone! Anyone had similar experience? |
