Question about CF roof durability

Excuse my noob ways when it comes to the CF roof. I searched and couldn't find an answer.

How does the CF roof hold up in terms of scratching? Will it scratch like paint will or is the finish more durable? Can it be waxed and treated the same way as paint?

It's pretty durable, has a thick layer of clear coat. Any light scratches can be buffed out easily.

Good to know, thanks. I am thinking of ordering a coupe to replace my car when the lease is up. I really like the look of the CF roof.

Yes make sure to get the CF roof over sunroof, it's so much prettier!

It should not scratch any more than the paint clear coat, but it is plastic. What I worry about is someone keying it deeply. Not sure if it could be repaired adequately or would have to be painted.

It isn't plastic... its carbon fiber under the clear coat... perhaps I misread your statement?

The clear coat on the CF scratches just like paint would. But I noticed that scatches and swirls are not as noticeable as it is on paint.

The roof is CFRP which is a composite, just meaning a material made of multiple materials. The carbon fiber strands are woven into a fabric and the fabric is stabilized into a solid with epoxy (glue). Cured epoxy is generally considered a plastic. However there is a lot of CF and not so much epoxy in a good grade of structural CFRP and the carbon is really hard as well. The key thing to making the system durable is a good grade of CF, good epoxy that cures hard and dense as well as offers significant resistance to environmental aging such as yellowing, common with cheap composites. Of course the clear coat is important as well but the same stuff used for the rest of the car should be fine here.

Whether or not a key or somthing similar, if used in a very aggressive fashion with intent to casue a lot of damage would damage the CFRP roof more or less than the SMC composite fenders or steel door is a big TBD. Let's hope we see NONE or very very few example pics posted here of such CFRP roof vandalism.

LOL i just called him. okay he had the car for 2 years, and some had it before him for 8k miles. he put like 40k miles on the M6.
i asked him that question and his reaction was: "FUCK NO MAN THIS SHIT NEVER HAPPENS." then he went on and on on how it's clear coated and guaranteed and if something happens to it they will replace that panel. he said the only thing that might happen is if you take it to a car wash and they use dirty towels on it, he said i'll scratch but that hasnt happened to his.

oh, he also said that only happens with $200 CF panels on civics.

that's everything he told me, as far as i remember.

it's easily replaceable. might cost a fortune if some mofo keys it deep. fuck keyers they should hang them in the balls.

i mean if they key ur doors deep enough you might need major work to fix the door. just dont think about it, *hopefully* it wont happen

It is no different to paint as its the lacquer that takes the damage (unless its a major scratch).

Mine had a light scratch on, no idea how, and the Swissol detailer got rid of it easily today when he prepped the car for me.
