Mobile phone compatibility in UK and Ireland

I'd be interested in any feedback on experiences using your mobile with the M3.
My Nokia 6230i was fine, with the snap-in-adaptor supplied 'free' by my car dealer. It paired with the car and the 'Contacts' list from the phone came up on the screen in the car.
All fine till my mobile was stolen, only to find that the 6230i isn't made anymore, so I bought a new Nokia e51. However, no Snap-in-adaptor available and even so, though the phone pairs with the car, the contacts won't go across, which is a real pain after you've got used to the full functionality. BMW dealer says its because the technology in the phone is too new!! The list of 'compatibile' phones he has given me has no current Nokia model with full tested compatibility.
And what does the future hold? What about new phones in 5/10 years time?
Are we stuck with 'old' software in the car which cannot upgrade as phones develop?
I'd welcome any information or guidance, Meanwhile, I've ordered 2 old 6230is on Ebay.

6300/6301 works ok with bmw and has a snap in adaptor, you'll get 1 number per contact same as 6230i. I've been using it with a 320D for 2 months now while awaiting my M3

In general nokia and bmw do not mix well, after 5 years you'd think they'd smack a few heads togeather.

No. The software in the cars Bluetooth unit can be upgraded and is part of the general software updates BMW provide to dealers. BMW however is generally slow to support new handsets. The only time we saw them really on top of things was when the Apple i-Phone was released.

Rory,

I am in Ireland and use a HTC i-touch (www.expansys.ie). the phone does not have a dock and is a very new model, (only released 6 months ago). The bluetooth works perfectly well, transfering all contacts, last numbers, top 8, etc etc.

Ray.

I was shocked to discover that the M3 works beautifully with my Nokia N95 8GB, which my 335 did not. Great news for Nokia users.
