Why so many M3s just sitting around?

It is exciting to see the members who have been waiting for their cars for a while finally take delivery.

However, it doesn't seem like these things are flying off of dealer's lots. What is the reason behind this?

-Economy?
-Sticker shock, $70,000 for a 3-series
- Poor marketing/launch by BMW...
-Crappy residual

etc.

or am I just imagining this.

That's a good point. I know I'm waiting on M-DCT. I can't wait until I can drive an M-DCT car and compare that with the C63 AMG this summer.

Their treating the car as the best car in the world. dont know why some dealerships are like that. when i was shopping for the M6 (first batches) it was the same thing, you couldnt test drive the car, which i thought was stupid, why would i get a car i dont even know how it drives.. so i finally found the right dealership and took it for a spin and my answer was YES YES YES !! i want it now.

I think it is largely that the M3 has more competition now than ever before. All previous generations saw the M3 as a truly unique car in the marketplace. Now it is being emulated by many companies, and although no one has knocked them from the throne, the M3 no longer takes the crown by mere default.

My dealer had two the day before launch that were not spoken for. I actually got to speak to the owner of the dealership about this. I don't know if he was just giving me BS, but he said that BMW sent them two cars that were not part of the normal allocation system. The dealer could use them as a demo or sell them.

by summer time their will be dozens of them lying around in show rooms. they just say that. eh. bmw's first mistake was to give this car a 70K price. 60K would have been better fully loaded. but oh wells. whats done is done, and people will always love the M3. and your right the M3 doesnt take it by default, because i saw the C63 already and its a beast. i stepped inside of it recently, because some guy that owns every single AMG out there had it delivered to the Benz dealership i buy from and my boy hit me up to see it. and its a beast.

Let us see. Home value took a dive, people can no longer refi their home and use it as a piggy bank.

Good value on 335i and 135i.

People got smart from previous gen M3, knowing markup will go away with time.

Poor economy? Contradictory to what BMW forcasts. It's ramping up production, maybe it knows something we don't

I think there's a poor economy ahead. Just look at our dollar index and gas prices. Terrible.

That being said, I hope they cut deals on the m3's if they aren't selling. I'm hoping...

I don't know why the E9x M3 was somehow expected to be selling better than any of the other M cars out there, when the whole new M Series cars were hurting from almost the get go.

So far, without exception, after 2-3 months in the market the M5, M6 and the M Z4 required deep discounts from BMW NA to move the suckers. The M5 was so bad that they thought that a half-ass 6 -Speed manual (only in the USA, to boot) implementation was going to fix the poor sales that a moody 7-Speed SMG was supposed to be causing in less than a year. Within 7 months of the M Z4 release, factory to dealer incentives got to $12-$14,000. A no money down lease on the M6 is cheaper than a $5000 down lease on the new M3...

If the M Series were not such a strong brand by itself, I would say that the word to describe this situation is "disaster".

I would say, although the economy/Euro exchange is killing the M in general ($20,000++ in options plus the imbecile "Additional Dealer Markup" are not a good sign of a great base car value), there's no doubt that this time the competition is much better -and more numerous- than ever. And, at the end of the day, the "take some time to be used to" styling simply hurt what used to be the trademark of the M in particular, instant/gotta have it attraction, IMO.

A lot of the potential M3 buyers have already modded their 335s to near M3 performance with the exception of a ton more torque. And when you consider the M3's gas mileage, well?
