Is the EDC a must have option on M3?

without the EDC, is it gonna be a totally different car?

It costs $2,000 bucks. If you want you can probably get some really nice coilovers with that money if you like the ability to adjust your ride height. I ordered mine without EDC.

Note that BMW Canada does not include EDC in any of their packages (unlike BMW USA where EDC is part of the technology package).

Having only driven ones with EDC so can't comments on whether normal springs/coils are worse or better but I have had a fair bit of experience between Magneticride suspension (Audi TT) and a normal TT and like most people here I didn't find that big of a difference between the two until you really leaned on things and started to throw the car really hard in to corners, especially directional changes, here is where the Magneticride came into it's own.

I'm guessing that EDC will be something similar, in other words 95% of the time the stock setup is perfectly fine, it's that final 5% which will make all the difference.

I like the customizability of EDC -- I'll need Comfort mode for shitty New Orleans roads, and then use normal and sport for good highways and the track.

As I mentioned in my review of..........

driving the car on the 'ring in Oct, some of the German instructors like the
Normal setting because it is adaptive to changing loads. The Sport setting is fixed and while it does stiffen up, it may not be the proper setting for all sections of the track. I drove it in all modes and found the car felt better in Sport Mode in our autocross exercises and in the timed sections of the track. I left it in Normal Mode while running the whole course and did not notice much difference. I never ran Comfort Mode. To answer your question,
I guess it depends on what the setup is without EDC, I would imagine somewhere in between and I don't know if this adapts or is fixed without the option? Bottom line is you probably won't notice in real world driving as this thig grips like crazy and does not understeer like the E46. I ordered mine with EDC .

What part of the general consensus we have heard that states that in an M3 with EDC set in comfort mode the comfort of the car surpasses that of the 335i?

EDC offers:
  • Comfort: More comfortable than even a 335i
  • Normal: Active suspension with a great tradeoff between performance and comfort.
  • Sport: Non active mode and very stiff, should be great for smooth tracks or for elimination of any undesired active EDCV interventions
When you choose to forget about or not use the available customization settings in a car you can not reap the advantages. For you the glass is simply always half empty.

Back on topic, as good as it seems EDC is, I don't think it is "essential". Essential is a pretty strong word. "Really nice" is a better way to say it IMHO (again only from all I have read).
