What happened to the 4.1s 0-60 M3 times?

Just got latest issue of Bimmer Magazine.

pg.4 - BMW's claimed 0-62 time for the new convertable (M3) is a fairly modest 5.2 seconds - half a second slower than the M3 coupe.

That puts the coupe at 4.7 seconds. That's it? 4.7 seconds?

But then the 425HP Hemi V8 Dodge Charger does 0-60 in 5.6 seconds so
maybe the M3's 0-60 in 4.7 seconds is correct.

4.7 is factory spec. and pretty conservative. At least two major mags have gotten 4.1 (C&D most recently with a sedan). Don't worry, it's plenty quick, but not designed as a drag car.

its only worth it if you use the same magazines tests...and they have relatively similar conditions... i read somewhere that some magazines power brake the launch while others think this is too damaging to the engine...plus the disparity in test equipment could make quite a difference as well...

Not sure how you "power brake" a manual?

BMW later lowered it to 4.8, and mags got 4.6, and even one 4.5.

This issue has been beaten to death already,,, but I must add my .02- CD posted 0-60 times of 4.1 (lowest to date). Other tests have pegged the coupe at 5.3 and 4.6. All this with the 6MT.

BMW tends to be conservative for some reason, as can be see with the 335i being off my about 1/2 second.

In my mind, 4.1 is the number! I believe with M-DCT, we will see High 3's being posted.

I beleive Road and Track also posted a 4.1.

I can't wait to try out the launch control on my M-DCT. It's gonna rock.

I suppose powerbraking a manual would consist of slipping the clutch and heel toe'ing the brake and gas...burning the clutch like none other...stupid, but i guess would get the job done for an newb that can't launch properly

4.1 was not a typo - two mags have got it- as with the e46, Greg noted some mages got well under 4.8.

I've seen 4.1 in C&D and another big magazine. I've also seen 4.3 and 4.4. The lowest I've ever seen was 4.4 by R&T and they weren't at their own track and they said they had traction issues and were not given the proper environment and time to get the best time.

You mean the "highest", but we get the drift.

I have yet to see the M3 place 4th in any comparison. Most recently it placed 2nd against three other cars that all cost at least $20K more. Are you talking 4th in 0-60 time only, or 4th overall?

Wait for M-DCT, that should lower the times with launch control.

Most manufacturers are very conservative with their performance figures specifically with the 0-60 times. The 300C SRT-8 has been clocked at 4.5 or 4.7 to 60 by C&D even though the manufacturer only claims above 5.0 seconds. The 4.8 by BMW is almost laughable, i haven't seen any of the Car mags done any higher than 4.5 seconds.

Autocar's Driver's Car of the Year 2007 placed the M3 6th overall. A bit harsh but enough Chris didn't place the that high.

The M3 is a great car, only it's not the best driver's car out there or even the best overall package but it's still a great car to own and drive.

i think everything under 4.5 for 0-62mph in the magazines is not very serious.
the cars might ve been "prepared" for the test and the test might ve been done under best conditions...
it depends on the magazine.
sportAuto and Automotorsport told 4.8sec and i guess thats realistic.

the performance of the M3 is definitely nothing to scoff at, but when compared to the likes of the GTR, it does fall behind a little especially with a similar msrp. That's why it would be tough, imo, that the dealers would be able to charge a premium or markup with the new M3s - the competition's really upped the standards.

I was kind of curious about something else I read in the May Bimmer magazine. It was talking about the new DCT transmission for the M3 and said it would handle 434 lb-ft of torque, far in excess of the 295 lb-ft produced by the M3's V6 engine.

Question is, why put a transmission that can handle 434 lb-ft of torque in a car that only produces 295 lb-ft?

hmmmm... what kind of engine produces alot of torque? This looks like a transmission you might put in a turbo charged car

Everyone has said the M3 will never be turbo charged but with the GT-R things may change. What's stopping BMW from producing an N/A M3 and
introducing (for about 10K more) a M3 TT?

I got clocked in mine at 4.5 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) at sea level. We also did the same in Mexico City and got 5.3 seconds. Of course, the City sits at a height of 7,400 feet elevation (2,250 meters) where the average atmospheric pressure is around 11.27 psi vs. 14.7 psi at sea level. This is the most important factor bearing into engine performance but also humidity and temperature have something to do with it. IMO timing from 0 - 100 is certainly important, but all the other good stuff such as how it accelerates after 100 kph, passing cars at 160 kph and how in handles/feels is more important in the final equation and this car does it absolutely wonderfully!!!!! Its an M3!!!
