Personally I prefer the 911.
I'm sorry, but I watch Top Gear for laughs and Fifth gear for real info. Top Gear drivers are just plain drivers, Fifth Gear drivers are actual or former race car drivers. Jeremy Clarkson (Top Gear) is NOT a race car driver. He is just an old man who rants about how he thinks certain cars look ugly. And he's very inconsistent. One episode, he REFUSES to drive the Bugatti Veyron and in the next episode he says he LOVES it. What unreliable information. Tiff (Fifth Gear) was a former race car driver so go download the Fifth Gear episode about the Cayman. Tiff is a better driver and he provides more objective information.

Drove the Cayman today, the car had sport seats, 19" wheels and std suspension.
I think the BMW sport seats were nicer than the Cayman sports.

The suspension was way stiffer and bouncier on crappy pavement than the 325 with the Sport package.
Interior was louder at all speeds, and the sound of the engine was much more prominant. A little loud but OK just cruising, and prominant while on the gas hard
The shift action in the Caymen was to die for, clutch action was better, and the car was the shit on a smooth curvey road.

Did it have the short shifter? I love the bullet trigger notchiness of Porsche gearboxes.

Standard Shifter.
The throw was much shorter than the BMW's. I did not see a need for a shorter one.

yeah, short shifter ($750 option) reduces the throw to about half of the 3 series length.

I love the Cayman but it's just too damm small. Way to screw over guys like me who need the space and can't exactly go out and buy an $80k 911 right now that has the space and the pace. Porshce needs to go one rung lower on the Boxster w/ a smaller car. That's wishful thinking.

From the reports it seems that the Cayman S is an excellent track car. But I really don't like the car much. The exterior styling will take a while for me to get used to, but most importantly the interior felt a bit cramped. I fit fine in both the 986 and 987 Boxster (though the 987 is even more roomy). Both the 996 and 997 911 are VERY roomy considering the overall dimensions.

However, the Cayman felt like a smaller version of the Audi TT. I still had an inch or so of headroom, but the top of the window was at eye level. The roof has a bit of a bulge to allow more headroom, but this results in my head actually extending higher than the side window.

So in the end, I would choose a used 911 over a new Cayman.

A MR would be better than a RR in handling would it? I don't know, but seems like Cayman S would be more fun to drive around curves.
