That may be bit of over statement, but if you fiqure at least 50% loss over five years with just 3-4 thousand miles per year, yeah it's bad to me.

As much as it was a very, very fast car, it was also too soft for me. The exhaust was far to quiet, the suspension too soft and the wheels to refined. Yes, all these things could be changed, but I did not want to put another $12k into a $135k car at the time. (A good exhaust for that car is $4-6K).

With all of this said, the turbo is a fantastic car for someone who is not concerned with the value. I may own one again, but it will likely be in another 6-10 years and it will be a keeper, so resale will not be a concern.

It is still an incredible car though.

My plan was to buy what I am buying today. With what I had in to the turbo, I was able to buy a 2008 335 Xi coupe as my daily driver and an 2008 M3 and still have $15k left. I can drive five times the miles combined and not be much worse in resale, imo. I do not sweat the miles now. I wanted to drive not just own a garage queen. Not that I don't enjoy staring at my cars in the garage sucking a few brews, but I want to drive them frequently too.

I agree the 911, any 911 isn't for every day use. Owned a Cayman S, then got a C2S Cabrio and now got an E92 M3.Love the M3, and use it every day.

I went to my dealer to place an order on my M yesterday. While i was there I asked the dealer how sales were doing. He said several of a couple of his customers where trading in thier 911 for M3's due to the rear seat / convenience factor... I guess the point is that the M3 is a hell of a car if people are trading in their 911's either that or the dealer is full of BS

I do prefer the M3 over a base 911, boxter or Cayman S though. The difference in price with the 911 S is not that much (unless you overload the Porsche with options), but it's worth it. (IMO)

A lot of people are in the same position as me.
I used to drive the Boxster S cause I can't afford the 911. It was and it is still a great driver's car. But I found out the it is not for every day use. Maybe the 911 can be use everyday, I don't know because I haven't driven one. I traded it for after a year to get the E92 ((I lost 12K in value ). I was not able to wait for the E92M3 and I think it was a bad move. I am now inching my way to get the new M3 because I still can't afford the 911S. If I could have waited and save my money instead of trading in my car, I could have afford the 911S.

in my personal opinion, if one could afford only one car then im sure that person would get the m3. the reason being is that the 911 is not a car you can DD-although it is a great piece of machine to drive (brother has one). basically, to have a 911 you need to have a second car that is DD able and to many people, that just doesn't make sense. this is where the m3 comes in..

in regards to the 911 itself, i find it hard to believe that many people who are looking for a pure sports car would not consider a porsche. in the sports car category, if you want something that has sports car and leather in the same vehicle, the porsche's are the most affordable in this respect.

my final thought is that its still immensely up to the person.

Prosche the Apple of Autos

Porsche makes fine cars just like Apple makes fine computers. And just like Apple they make huge profits by overcharging there loyal customers. I just don't see myself paying a premium just for the name Porsche. The 911 is so good because it has been in development for 40 years. So if they decide to bring there profit margins inline with the all the other auto makers I would buy one tomorrow.

Boshhaab, why is the M much more expenssive than the 997s? That doesn´t make sense.

911 will always have a special place in my heart.....I dunno why but, I always love the way 911 looks. Someday, when I'm tired of performance(you gotto admitt, you can get better performing cars for that price), I will go for my dream and get a 911

I am selling my 911 (997S) and switching to an 08 M3. I drove the 911 as my DD, and it was fine. It is a great car, but I am just as excited by the new M3. Each car has its merits, and I will probably consider another Porsche down the line.

I do agree the Porsche is overpriced (they shed their value pretty fast). But that means it is pretty easy to jump into a relatively new Porsche at a significant discount (did I mention mine is for sale ).

Cheers.

If I wanted to spend the money on the 911 I would want, I'd probably be tempted by Aston Martin as well..

This is how I'm coming down to a final decision. We have 3 cars already and I don't want 4 (indeed, sold a 4th to rationalize as there's only 2 of us), which means that the M3 is likely to take over from the 530i as DD.

I really want a 911 someday (hankered for one since childhood toy car 911 days) - but only when I move in from the country and don't need to drive 25k / year. Even my wife prefers the P-car option to the M3. But the only stipulation she had on this point was that whichever car I chose, P-car or M3, that it would NOT be languishing in the garage & kept for weekend use only. Given the practical drawbacks of putting 25k / year on a 911 (not least of which is that service is 50 mi away) I can't justify the 911 purchase for now.

The M3 will give me huge performance, be less visible in my local town (a plus) and be comfy enough to do DD duty.

I'd take a GT3 thanks - for my track car.

The 911 is a way way superior car to the M3. The M3 is now so damn overpriced at 70k, you are now looking at a base Carrera. I have the 911. It is way beyond the M3.

I've been a P-car guy for years....however I never have liked the 911 series very much...I just can't get past the engine in the wrong end thing.... that plus the relatively low HP and high price just isn't worth it for me..... A similarly optioned 911 would be well over 90K....vs 70 for the M3..... Once you've driven a 911 at track speeds...they just handle weird....some people love it...but its not for me!!

Don't know if your premise is really true anymore. I've always had two favorite cars: 911 C4S and the M3. I think the M3 traditionally has appealed to a younger crowd. I saw the M3 as my mid to late 20's car and the porsche as the car I'd aspire to have when a bit older and more financially stable. not sure this really applies now though. the M3 has become more expensive and now performs better. In the past, I don't think the M3 was as much of a competitor, so the answer would have been yes to your question (i.e. the porsche would have been a more expensive/harder to attain, and more performance). Now though, the M is pretty close, so I think people choosing the M aren't necessarily choosing it because they can't get the 911, but rather because the M3 is comparable and perhaps even a bargain in comparison.

If I was a little older and have another car, then yes I would go with the 911.
Even though 911s can be a DD, I just can't see myself driving it daily!

I would agree that the M could be considered to be a bargain by some when compared to the Porsche, but with the release of the 997.2 base Carrera -with a well optioned price of about $10-$12k more- that gap is lessening.
