I'm UPGRADING to a 2008 M3 (from my previous 2000 360 Modena F1 that broke every time I drove it)...
the 360 F1 would roll free like a real manual (I liked this about it). any info on how DCT behaves? Does it roll free or does it idle forward like an automatic? |

Unless it has some system built in to regulate it, it will roll forward and backward freely. Remember, it's still a manual box - just with an electrohydraulic mechanism.
In the Ferrari F1 system, the clutch was: A) Constantly slipped while holding position on a hill or in reverse B) Made of bread and butter ![]() I'm anxious to hear what other troubles you had with your Modena. Did you do a PPI prior to getting it? I've heard they are pretty reliable as long as the service is kept up to date and the campaigns are all completed. Best, Patrick |

It depeds they car be designed to behave in either way. VW DSG does creep like an automatic. The new Mitsubishi Evo does not creep like an automatic. Of course the hill holding feature is entirely separate from the level ground creep issue. I would love the know what BMW has implemented here as well.

SMG II and III both rolled forward and backward freely. My guess is that DCT will behave the same or they would have announced the difference.

If I understand it correctly you can have it both ways. DCT doesn't creep by default, but you can activate the so called "low speed assistant", which seems to be a fancy description for creeping.

I'm guessing that it will be somewhere in between IF the M3 really has BER. With BER it would make sense to keep the clutch engaged on deacceleration to recoup as much energy as possible. Then somewhere at low RPM and/or vehicle stopped it might fully disengage

That's how it feels on my SMG II. On deceleration the clutch remains engaged and only at very low speeds/RPM can you feel it disengage.

That's right I do think I read that. As I understand this feature it is not so much a user preference but a feature to ease low speed parking where you want to move really slowly. Either way I guess you could certainly call it a preference but that does not seem to be how BMW is presenting it.
