Not really...it's always concerning with 1st year production but IMO that's what the warranty is for. It might even get extended to 100k like with SMG II.

What do you think about the paddles on the wheel vs. on the column in terms of track usage?

Also, where do you track? (I am assuming you are in Silicon Valley. I lived there for 11 years, and might move back in a couple of years...)

Sadly I have not driven one of the cars with the paddles on the column. At track speed I like them on the wheel since I never shuffle both hands. The quicker rack on this car should make that the case for 99% of the turns out there. The debate as to shuffle or not is about as religious as choice of brake pads with no right answer.

At autocross speeds the column would be better. However, with the power to weight of this car its unlikely you would ever want to shift back to 1st and its unlikely you would want 3rd while having the wheel cranked over that much. So not likely to be an issue.

Most of my track time has been split between Lagua Seca, thunderhill, and Buttonwillow. I have been to Reno Fernley and GIR a few time also.

Yes, that's what I've been thinking/hoping ever since I saw the steering ratio.

M-DCT Stand alone option ?

Will 2MK be a stand alone option or is it bundled with nav or technology package. I haven't seen it on an ordering guide. I have a coupe on order and am waiting for an '09. I'm trying to decide wether to stick with a December 08 delivery or wait until March 09 for the build date as that seems to be when non safety related upgrades are implemented.

Good question. I am assuming DCT would be stand-alone, provided you don't need iDrive to configure it. The initial pics of the lever revealed 3 buttons directly under it, so there is a good chance it can be configured without iDrive.

Do you know when MY09 production for the US will start? August? If they can't deliver a car to me by May, I would be interested in going for MY09 since I'll be gone for a couple of months this summer.

Do you guys think the DCT's price will be the same as the 6MT, like in the M5? Will the DCT and convertible be available from the beginning in the US?

Not a chance in hell. The german pricing for M-DCT is 3800 Euros so I'd say our option price for M-DCT will be about $3400 give or take. At least that's my guess at US pricing.

The only reason SMG was the same price as the 6MT in the case of the M5 was because it was for the US market only in order to meet US demand. BMW had to meet this demand and develop a 6MT especially for the US buyers, and in order to recoup the cost of bringing one to market, the 6MT was offered as a no-cost option even though in reality, it probably costs less in parts and manufacturing if you don't count the R&D. If anything, the 6MT should've stickered for less if it had been originally developed as the standard transmission for the E60 M5's launch, with the SMG as an extra cost option.

Yeah, it's all guessing at this point. But given the better than anticpated pricing on some of the other options, I gooing to say it won't be over $3k.

MY 09

Lucid. I'm just guessing that 09 production will start in September. I'm expecting software upgrades to the PROGMAN for the M-DCT to be implemented at that time and therefore have requested a December delivery in U.S. I found the frequent software changes for the first year BMW 645i to settle down at about the middle of the second model year run in 05. So discretion tells me to wait til March 09. But, I'm anxious to get the car as soon as I can. My experience with a new model BMW in the past involved many visits to the dealer (More than 10).

I know that some feel that's what the warranty is for. But my life was completely disrupted by frequent visits to fix the many software problems. Driving crummy smoke saturated rental cars. I'd rather let someone else work these things out with BMW mechanics and PUMA cases and PROGMAN updates and then buy.

That's the spirit. What people have to remember is that to us enthusiasts, the tranny might be worth $3k or more, but to the average American buyer, that will seem an outlandish price for an "automatic". I guessing the mid-$2ks will be palatable enough to achieve some volume.

Yes, it'd be a real downer to have this car sit in the shop. But I think this technology has matured considerably. I hear VW did not have any issues with its automanual for instance, which should be a similar design. Yes, that's a low torque application, but still. And I am hoping BMW learned some valuable lessons with the SMG software. Plus, this transmission is supposed to be much smoother, less trauma to the components, etc.

Did your dealer say anything to you about MY09 production? A few months ago, a local dealer told me MY09 would not be released until Spring'09, but I think he was BSing me to get me to put money down at the time.
