EVO Mag - M3 v C63AMG v VX8R

Have got back from trip away to find latest mag on doorstep. Am tired so can't write too much but a couple of quotes:

"Straight away the BMW is different to the Merc, with refreshing clarity in its steering"

"By a unanimous verdict, the M3 wins. The others are instantly more appealing; the VXR8 for its sound and oversteer availability, the C63 for its polish, ambience and monstrous pace. Yet while it takes longer to get to know the M3, when you do, it reveals a depth of ability that is more inspiring and rewarding. After a determined drive, it leaves you more satisfied, showing that really big power can only take you so far"

Overall Rating:
M3 5 stars
C63AMG 4.5 stars
VXR8 4 Stars

The second quote above sums it up for me. Having just had the cars first service I am now into a different world and a journey and EVO have hit the nail on the head - this car is just getting better and better as the journey continues.

Having read the article I went out for a quick blat as I have not driven all week. I had a race with an RS4 tonight and when he realised he could not keep up coming out of the roundabouts he gave up - seemed when the M3 hit 6k to redline area I pulled away quite a bit. I knew this car was fast but now I know its REALLY fast!

This getting to know the M3 may be the reason why so many reviews have not given it the resulting comments we all know it should get.

It is happening the same also in other Forum (Italians) where people start to change their opinion about the M3 only because they know her better....
Give her other 6 months, let to arrive the DSG (I am manual gear fan anyway)
and we will see:-)
Evo now will test this car for a long period .She replaced the RS4...Let the time to run and we will see....

I believe that EVO criticized the steering during it's previous tests.
Now they label the steering as "refreshing clarity".
Were all the negative reviews before just to sell copies? If so, are we to believe that EVO is truly the drivers enthusiasts mag people said it was?

Yeah epacy - that initial review does not jibe well - independent and objective analysis, bah, humbug!

Good to see that other people notice this as well, I'm still not done with the run in, but after 3.000 km the engine - and the car in general - feels more "eager"? Difficult to describe but it feels like there is less friction in the engine and drive train. Love her more each day.

Think that's the amazing part: Initially somewhat irritating (big support at low speeds) the steering only needs some time of customization. Once you're getting used to it....

Best regards, south

Maybe they meant the steering in relative terms. By itself they didn't like it, but next to the Merc and Vauxhall it seems crisper.

Or maybe they make gross generalizations....

For example,

What a car journalist writes-

"I felt the M3's steering was quite vague."

What he actually meant-

"I felt the M3's steering was quite vague compared to the Enzo and GT2 I drove last week but its great compared to other cars in its class."

When the journalists subjectivity is actually put into a context the review is actually good. Go figure....

Wow, pretty good whooping. As usual, so much for the power increases from the C63.

Wow, are you sure of the times, especially it being slightly damp because the M3's time is as quick as an M6 in the dry (1:26.4), just slightly slower than a 996Turbo in the dry (1:26.0) and well ahead of a RS4 (1:28.25) again in the dry.

The best damp track lap time prior to this was from a Lambo Murcielago (1:28.7).

A miracle car is the name for it.

My MB dealer told me the C63 would be priced lower than the M3....how can I not go with that now? I mean...better options/interior and more straight line power (face it...that's what most of us use in a daily driver).

Grrr, hard choices.

I dont pay to much attention on straightline. A M3 isnt a slow car in straightline, there is enough speed for us humans. Also it doesnt matter how fast car you got, there is always someone that is faster.
No matter what you choose, you get some fine toys.

how much straight line speed do you need in a daily driver? are you saying the power in an m3 is insufficient for daily driving? i highly doubt that.
