Where is the RS5?

I haven't heard anything about this car since those few dissappointing camparos.

Are people just giving up on it? I've looked for threads about the car almost everywhere and there seems to be little enthusiasm about the RS5. Audiworld, Audizine, Audi section of 6speed, noone is chatting about it.

Are we still a ways out from when it hits US soil? Is that the reason noone cares?

I was looking forward to hearing more about this car.

Probably because the consumers have spoken with their lack of interest in a car that is too heavy and too expensive.

The Audi Quattro Concept is what the "RS5" should have been. Maybe Audi is smart enough to realize their mistake and actually put the Quattro Concept into production to replace the bloated RS5 which appears will have a very short and small production run.

The Quattro Concept would really pique my interest if it maintains those specs and can come in no higher than M3-RS5 price range.

I would definitely pass up a new M3 or 1M for such a true lightweight sports car.

BMW M3 won another comparo test against the RS5, C63 AMG and Alpina B3 S.

The RS5 took 3rd place, behind M3 and Alpina B3 S, and in front of C63 AMG.

Even in straight line, the RS5 is not so fast...both the M3 and Alpina B3 S are faster.

On the track, the M3 killed everyone, faster by 1,4 seconds than RS5 on Hockenheim

This is the link:

http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/v...s-2212679.html

Only in German , but Google translate would do it.

So, this is where RS5 is, beaten up by an Alpina B3 S.

I think they went overboard with the styling and that's what killed it. to be honest, i would still be very interested in the rs5 if they would have stick with the s5 style and add some subtle/classy changes such as wider fender, wide tires, no wing, bigger quad exaust, classier looking rims, and price it no more than 5k than the m3 zcp. i wouldn't care about the 10% better or worse performance if they went with what i suggested above.

no 6MT was the deal killer as well.

I don't know about the states, but here Audi is way overpriced, seems to me the only true RS car is the RS6

RS5 is a true disappointment. They should have dropped the RS6 engine in with 580hp and 479Ib-torque. That would have made one hell of a sports coupe

I think that the biggest problem with the RS5 (aside from its piglet weight and ho-hum HP numbers) are the indistinguishable differences with it and the S5. Sure I can see the difference between oval and quad exhaust pipes, but I was hoping it would do a little more song-and-dance.

The wheels are whatever and the grill is unimaginative. I can barely see the fender differences. And I am TRYING to look for them.

Too bad.

Not to mention the Price is retarded. Why would anyone pay More for less?

Audi's problem is not power, but handling. With the RS6 engine on, the RS5 would handle even worse...the heavy nose will have a direction of its own

Let's see - a bespoke chassis built in very small numbers, made from Alu and CF, unique engine, with high federalization costs - will definitely NOT come in at the M3/RS5 price.

If they built it, it would cost 911/GT-R prices and up - between $80k-100k. Perhaps even more.

My interest is most certainly piqued, but I cannot see myself paying that kind of money - so at best, I'll look for a used example in 2015-2016.

Completely untrue.

The RS5 4.2 Liter V8 is truly a masterpiece with awesome technology in it. However, the biggest enemy RS5 has is its weight. It needed to be 300 pounds lighter atleast. Having a bigger, heavier engine would have made the dynamics worse.

The engine is not unique, it appears to just be a tuned version on the TT-RS engine from everything I've read. Here is the full press release:

http://www.fourtitude.com/news/publi...cle_6258.shtml

"Numerous tweaks resulted in a substantial power increase to 408 hp, and its 480 Newton meters (354.03 lb-ft) of torque also leave the base version far behind."

As fas as the carbon fiber, for a production version it is likely much of this would be replaced with cheaper and equally light plastic or fiber glass materials. I would definitely prefer this as there would be little advantage of carbon vs price on these parts. In addition the Carbon bucket seats obviously would not make it over to the states if this car happens, which takes another several thousand off the price.

"The hood and the rear hatch with its integrated, moveable spoiler, plus the bumpers and numerous aerodynamic components are made of even lighter and high-strength carbon."

I Don't agree on price either. This car could not be in 911 price range.

The 911 base starts at 78k and the 911 S at 90k. You have to keep in mind Audi and Porsche are now the same company, and there is little chance they would make the Sport Quattro a direct competitor to the 911.

I would assume this would be marketed by the VW Group in a similar way to what a theoretical Cayman RS would be. Just at or below base 911 price would be the peak for a viable car.

75k base price would be my best educated guess. In other words the same as a well optioned ZCP E92 M3 with DCT.

I realize that - I was thinking that it will only go in 1 car at one time - so no economies of scale.

You are talking about 2 Porsche models, vs. 1 Audi and 1 Porsche.

They weren't shy of making the R8 a competitor to the 911 Turbo - in both price and performance.

It will have a more exotic construction in it than any other Audi bar the R8, will be sold in fewer numbers than any other Audi bar the R8, etc. Their numbers simply won't add up otherwise.

Let's agree to disagree.

Even at $75k, I see no reason not to buy a CPO 997.2 C4S instead of this.

There is a red RS5 lurking in the Reston, VA area. It belongs to the VW Headquarters. Apparently they bring over a test mule of all the cars to HQ before they bring them to the states. The execs get to flog them around town in between car shows and events for a year or so before they hit the shores.
They've also had the TT-RS for a while.

+1 for the RS5 being over priced for what it is

they must have done some consumer research and decided RS5 has a minimal market here in the US based on the price.

My guess is, it'll be significantly more expensive than the M3 and objectively is not much better if at all better than the C63 and/or M3.

Anyone have Euro pricing for all three cars for comparison?

Personally, if RS5 is the same price as M3, you'd have to talk me out of not buying it. I love AWD.

On a side note, remember how expensive and overpriced the RS4 was when it went on sale? I think it was in the neighborhood of $80k initially with no negoitation b/c there were no competitors. Those owners are kicking themselves b/c their RS4 on the used market is really worth about $46k now b/c the used M3s are currently selling at this price.

it's probably not a mule, but a preproduction version used for magazine testing and everything. I'd have to stop by the corporate offices in Reston and take a look. I've driven by before seen some cool hardware there....Lambo, R8 etc...

I saw my first RS5 yesterday while filling up at the garage. Car was a metallic gray and if i'm honest it made the M3 look a bit ordinary. Spoke to the owner for 5 minutes or so.
Still wouldnt trade though, driving experience is more important to me than looks.

Its a nice car. Not too sure about it making the m3 look ordinary at all. If it wasnt the exhaust note I would have not known it was a rs5. The hood is plain and huge. Given the M3 has been out there for a while now and rs5 is the new kid on the block I have to disagree. Will find out once I get to drive one but I am pretty sure I would still like the m3 better. To me it looks like a hammer but the m3 looks sharper.

no surprise because i think the e90 m3 is pretty so so in term of look. you should have bought the e92 m3 coupe. park the e92 m3 zcp next to the rs5 and it's a differen story. my point is proven in all the rs5 vs m3 zcp comparison. the m3 coupe just look the best in those vids.

I agree....
The RS5 sides have no contours....just straight, flat and boring! and then compare that to a M3....
