So after many conversations with regular guy about building my engine into a stroker, I decided that because of the logistics of doing the build, getting the car to him and having a place to store it in the mean time. I decided it would be best to find a core to build an engine with. This way my Original engine will be untouched and my car will be able to be returned to totally original spec, should I choose to do this in the future........ This is important to me because I don't intend on ever selling my E90 and having all of the original parts for the car is important to me.
Anyhow, the build will commence later on this year and it will be 4.5L of displacement with Schrick 284 cams, upgraded valve springs, Carrillo HD rods, custom crank, properly adjusted main and rod bearing oil clearances and properly adjusted rod side clearance. I was very fortunate to have found a low mileage (23k miles) complete engine out of an 09 M3 with rear end damage to use for the build for a killer price. I'll be getting it in late June and the build will commence early in 2015....... Completion will hopefully be in time for Bimmerfest 2015. |

Drove and raced with a dinan stage 3 M3 with 4.6L stroker, upgraded diff, upgraded throttle body etc. Not impressed, supercharger is way cheaper and way faster...

Custom crank, as in flat plane crank?
Where does one find these engines? Thanks.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

more being done than a Dinan. the fact hes doing a stroker and cams is whats going to give it good gains. last time i checked dinan doesnt do cam work. *which is where a lot of power is.)

Finally a S62B50 going NA nuts with cams too!
Can't wait to see how you progress with the build.

Good luck with the project, I really hope it turns out well for you!! From what we've seen yet from strokers, I really think a used a VT2 for $6-7k would be a better move but I whish you make me change my mind!
Anyway I'll be following religiously! Last edited by Alex07M3; 03-19-2014 at 11:11 AM.. |

Is there any good proof that longer duration cams are beneficial to strokers?
Typically when I think of a stroker motor, I'm thinking of a power band that has been shifted to the left, for earlier (lower RPM) maximum torque and peak power. With a longer duration cam, I'm thinking of a power band that has been shifted to the right, for later (higher RPM) peak power. It seems to me that these two changes to the stock motor are in opposition to each other, but I am curious to see your results. |

Awesome.
I'd trade my blower in an instant to get a cammed stroker capable of pulling hard to a 9k redline. And track power will be a lot more consistent than a blower car where the ECU pulls a lot if timing based on elevated EGTs, coolant temps, oil temps, etc. Good luck!

Jeez what is with all these get a VT-XXX for more power comments. Maybe OP doesn’t want to go FI, maybe he wants to maximize performance and still remain NA. SC has many draw backs, heat, engine stress etc. I would take an NA purpose built stroker, over a bolt on SC any day. Power isn’t everything, all the time.
