2004 BMW M3  [10.00]
OP, your E46 looked almost exactly like mine and we both still have the same wheels on our E90s

Nobody can say with certainty how much the car will depreciate but the car definitely isn't appreciating anytime soon.
If you're planning on getting rid of it anyways, might as well do it now and as mentioned before, summer is a good time to sell.
Whatever decision you choose, good luck.

It's going to depreciate (miles, age, cars on market, etc), so what is the value to you of being able to drive it over the next 9 months versus driving your beater?

If being able to drive it for 9 months isn't worth $3-4K to you, I'd sell now.

Not going to comment on how much it will depreciate, since no one here has a crystal ball, but if it's paid off and the only thing you are eating is a bit of depreciation, I'd say keep it. A lot can happen in a year, and if at that point you change your mind about getting the F80, you are stuck with your beater or need to get a different car. If you hold onto it, you still have the option to do nothing. If you still like the car and think you'll still want to drive it in the next year, the depreciation hit seems like a cheap option to not being forced into buying a car in a year.

Thanks. That's my thought for now. I love those wheels but only in diamond black. I feel the ones with the polished lip make it look smaller. The F80 will get the same wheels as well :-)

I won't be driving it much in the winter when there is salt or snow so looks like it makes sense to not sit on it till next year.

I wish I could say that. 3-4k is a lot of money.

You are correct and I would have totally been thinking the same thing if my car had 40-42 k miles now so by next summer it would be at where I am now (51k miles). But since I am already at 51k it will be the 60k mile range and the trend for German cars seem to be a big drop in pricing and desirability for anything over 60k miles. What do you think? This is probably my number 1 concern

It seems like you are set on selling it so might as well sell it now and save yourself the money instead of owning it for another few months and losing money on it. You kind of missed the timing already because prices have dropped since the F8x's started hitting the streets in June/July. (Best time to sell was maybe around April/May) It will continue to drop as more e9x owners realize that they want the f8x and start putting their cars up for sale. One advantage you have is that you have an LCI E90 and has extended warranty (which will be less if you choose to sell later and won't be as attractive).

Not sure how true this is. Yes it's anecdotal, but there are lease reports that in April/May, dealers were allowing buyouts a few thousand below residual, now they are holding firm (meaning the E9x market has firmed a bit). That's probably a somewhat decent indication of the market. No guarantees the F80 will do so well depreciation of E9Xs will pick up. It might, it might not. I've also seen a lot of stories of dealers lowballing trade-ins, hoping the buyer thinks it's a soft market, then jacking the price way up for sale.

I think the biggest drop is when the car exits warranty (or is very close to that point), and not based on a strict mileage number. You can always drive your beater enough to keep the mileage down under the 60k level, if you think it's psychologically significant (I don't).

IMO if you can own your E90 outright (which you said you do) and afford a brand new 2016 M3, the nominal difference in depreciation over the next several months shouldnt be a consideration.
+1

Why live 1 year of your life like this? It is like dieting so you can binge eat next week.

If your finances are challenged by the trade then don't trade at all. That car you OWN is already great.

It is not about the finances being challenged. Hard to explain but there is always a good time to sell a car and guess I was asking myself if now is the right time.
