yes, this is the analysis on the 2nd oil change, I'm currently running my third oil change, which I will get another UOA after I rack up some more miles.

I just got the report back today for 0w40.
Here it is below. Looks like no issues. 4000 miles with a half dozen autocross events, a track day at over 100 degrees F and daily commuting. Mobil 1 0w40 is holding up great (with about 2 quarts of 10w60 mixed).

Looks good to me. I'd just run straight M1 0w40 and push the interval to 7500. As I've said, M1 is a very capable oil for extreme use such as track days.

Analysis on oil that has been in the car for 11K km. Odometer is 31K km.
Car has only been to the dealership for all servicing and oil changes, which I take to be the BMW-approved Castrol factory fill. First owner, car never tracked. |

So I wasn't really concerned about bearing wear until about a year ago when I came across this thread. What made me even more concerned is that I didn't drive it under 3k when the oil wasn't up to temp. I took it easy but I did get the revs up to 4-5k on occasions. Put on top of that my short commute to work which is approximately 3 miles each way, and I go home for lunch so if you think about it, it's 4 short trips on cold oil that never got up to temp.
Since I came across this thread, I have been keeping it under 3k and taking longer routes to work. The oil analysis is one year worth of driving which is a mere 2500 miles and decided to change it because the oil has been in there for a year now. I have also changed it out to M1 0w-40. Temps do get up to normal operating temp faster now. We'll see how the next analysis is. Yeah I know I need to drive it more, trust me I am going to now. Don't mind the sig or the handle, I do have a E90 M3.

2011 car with 27k miles on the clock. Time frame between oil changes have been 1 year, and that was roughly 7500 - 8000 miles per change. Time to red-line it in my garage at startup since it looks like I have been babying it!

Heres my first report.
Notes: 13 E92 M3 with ESS VT1 550 Supercharger M1 0W-40 1 Track day on this fill I used TWS for the first 800mi until post break-in service. Then TWS through SC break-in until about 4K miles. However, there were multiple TWS fills during this time due to swapping out oil coolers twice. Since this is my first report there is no basis for comparison yet. Here's my first report. Break-in service @ 2000KM was done at the dealer and this is the first oil change after that with 10W60. Copper seems a little high as noted in their report, but we'll see what happens for the next sample. Not sure where the copper would be from. Haven't looked into that yet.

Get a TBN and TAN next time. I suspect you could've run it well past 5k. Keep getting reports so you can generate a baseline and monitor over time.

Nope, looks fine. Keep getting the reports and monitor over time. One report by itself is of limited utility.

A bit worried about the high iron content, even though Blackstone says they aren't. I'm hoping since this was the 3rd oil change (1.5k miles, 15k miles, then this one at 30k) that maybe the engine is still breaking in? As the new owner, I won't continue the 15k mile change interval, but still don't like that iron level...any feedback guys?
Edit: Ignore the Unit / Location Averages. That's for a different car. Last edited by Rupes; 08-18-2014 at 08:47 PM.. |

Whenever I see a low viscosity I always wonder if they have actually put !0W60 oil in when they did the oil change. Mine at 14,000 miles was still around 18 (yours at 14.21).

It's entirely possible it was topped off with something other than TWS. BMW does permit this -- the dealer might have put in the HP 5w30 if it was reading a bit low.

hey guys, on your samples, please let them know whether you're using the old TWS or the new Castrol Edge Professional. The formulas are different between the two oils.
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=926080 Major differences are the use of Moly which is much needed in this reformulation, The EDGE Professional TWS has: -215ppm of Moly (vs. 1ppm for TWS Motorsport) -Half of the Boron (72 vs 156) of TWS M. -Has Titanium while Motorsport does not -Twice the Calcium -Almost no Magnesium (vs. 636ppm) -About the same Phosphorus and Zinc. -*Is a little lighter with 100.2 SUS V. at 210*F (vs. 108.2) -*Is a little lighter with 20.4 cSt V 100*C (vs. 22.26) -*has a higher flash point of 485*F (vs. 450*F) -*A higher TBN of 12.3 (vs. 9.1) For those viewing these reports....if you see TWS listed and Moly numbers are high, that means they are using Edge Pro and not old TWS. We should stop using the word "TWS" going forward for OEM oil...unless someone is still depleting their old stock of TWS, most suppliers have moved onto the new Castrol Edge Pro. what are we looking for in terms of the wear metals and possible indication something might go wrong? Are we looking for consistent quantities?
My lead continues to be somewhat elevated (though Blackstone is not concerned as other metals are not found), and lead levels have gone down significantly over time. Wouldn't logically, you would think if lead is the first layer, it'll go down first, then I'll start seeing copper and the other "bad indicator" metals? Just a little confused on what I'm actually looking for as the indicator. Last edited by Flying Ace; 08-19-2014 at 04:48 PM.. |

TWS simply means 10w-60 and refers to all variants of this oil. The edge pro is simply an updated formula and rebranding of the product which has always retained the TWS moniker in some fashion. |

Yes, to clarify my comment, people should start distinguishing their use of "old TWS" and "new TWS"- labeled Edge Professional. The two formulas are different. http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=926080 |
