When I make a low speed right or left turn from a stop i've been noticing some noise . It feels /sounds like it's coming from the diff. Anyone experience this ?

car has about 22k miles

Just had my diff fluid changed yesterday and I'm already noticing a huge improvement!

What you want them to use is part # 832 222 82 583, which is SAF-XJ + FM Booster.

Change the diff fluid. Takes about 45 minutes while you wait at the dealer.

Just happened to me last weekend. Took it to BMW for service and they added fluids for the diff, they also told me that it will take 500 miles or so for the fluid to cycle through.

This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B33 01 02 dated February 2008.

SUBJECT
Grinding Noise from the Differential during Slow Cornering

MODEL
E46 M3 from start of production

E60 M5 from start of production

E63, E64 M6 from start of production

E90, E92 and E93 M3 from start of production

SITUATION
A grinding noise may be heard coming from the differential during slow cornering.

This noise is best heard during tight cornering situations.
For example : while parallel parking, driving in a tight circle, etc.

CAUSE
When the rear wheel speed differential varies during tight cornering, a slip stick effect is created on the lining and steel discs incorporated in the differential locking clutch, causing the grinding noise.

This noise typically goes away as the locking clutch discs in the differential are broken in.

The break-in time varies depending on driving habits.
For example : tighter cornering (working the locking clutch) means that it takes less time to break in the locking clutch discs.

CORRECTION
If a complaint is verified as described above on the E46 M3; E60 M5; E63 and E64 M6; or on the E90, E92 and E93 M3 vehicles, the differential oil should be replaced with a specially formulated differential oil, BMW part number 83 22 2 282 583.

Road test the vehicle. (the part I hate the most and every other technician.perhaps most of them skip this part.I would rather give you the option to perform this or at least inform you of this procedure.)

With the vehicle at operating temperature
Drive in tight circles (20 circles in each direction), allowing the special oil to coat the locking clutch discs.

The grinding noise will decrease when the locking clutch discs are sufficiently coated. Some slight noises may still be heard after driving in tight circles. Its necessary to drive the vehicle up to 600 miles before all noises are eliminated as stated by the manufacturer.

Note: Vehicles that have had the differential oil converted to this special oil should continue to use this oil whenever a service requiring the differential oil replacement is indicated.

Great info to know! I had always just thought that was minor rubbing from tires. Thanks!

dude guys, go get the diff fluid with the friction modifier, it solves the problem.

Do it before your free maintenance ends. B/C it's not harmful to the car, I would time it for a mid-term fluid change or at the tail end of your plan. That's what I did. Got 1 free diff fluid change out of it as a result. Otherwise, I would have only had 1 diff fluid change in the entire plan.

I assume the fluid change due to this TSB is not covered outside of warranty?

I notice mine on tight right turns at full lock, i usually just push in the clutch for the turn so I don't hear the noise..

It's been almost a month since I posted in this thread and I'm happy to report that the diff noise is completely gone! It only took about a week for the new fluid to work its magic. The car is also much smoother in low speed, full-lock turning situations, like parking lots.

Anyone experiencing the symptoms should not hesitate at all to have the fluid changed.

THIS. I reckon this is what I have. Does it sound vaguely like tyres scrubbing the guards when cornering at low speed?

Why am i noticing this more prominently when car is cold? Took it to dealers once before and they told me it was low tyre pressure, but it wasn't.

mine sounds like tire rubbing, or maybe a really bad wheel bearing

I don't know if it's the same noise, but at low speeds when I shift from 1st to 2nd gear I hear a "tin" noise from underneath. I've taken my car 3 times to service and still have the noise, this really sucks!

When I first got my e93, this was happening to me. I took it in and they told me it was because they put the wrong fluid in the differential. They changed it and it never happened again

Hi guys,

to update on the issue I had my service technician replace my diff oil - he agreed this would be the cause of the issue but noted it may take 1,500kms to fully wear in. It has definately mitigated the issue almost completely, but a little noise still remains from time to time. Has definately helped.

We're not talking about a 'grinding' noise as described in the 'grind' of a transmission, right?

I describe the noise more like a long continuous metal-on-metal friction sound, almost like the sound a train makes while stopping on rails, just not as high-pitched.

I get this when turning tightly (mostly right turns), and only on occasion. I self-correct the noise by turning in a little - never tried to depress the clutch though.

Anyone know if this is the same issue?

Ahhhh!
So it's diff fluid causing this grinding sound from the rear end that has been bothering folks with this car for years.
It's awesome that someone finally figured this out. I hope in the future that people search the forum when this happens to them. They will be able to find this very helpful thread that obviously no one had ever thought to post before.
