Yeah! I heard about it from TB as well, heavily questioning it's capabilities until I began experimenting with it and validating it myself. For those that want to play do buy it, it is great software for very little $.

Be careful with three key things.

1. Losses, default parameters are OK but not perfect.
2. Shift times
3. Integration time steps

Sorry guys, I go through computers like I go through underwear. I think Cartest is on my computer, 3 computers ago......

I actually thought Swamp had some special lab and computing capabilties.

On a serious note....should we start a thread posting different models that we add into the database? We could get a running database going between us, share it with the world and have the world contribute.

We would be able to resolve many disputes quickly.

Thoughts??

T Bone,

That is not a bad idea. What would be great is to use simulation equipment and have a list of cars showing the projected acceleration times based on only the data supplied by the manufacturers with what ever adjustments are needed to standardise the figures supplied, for example weight which each manufacturers uses different method of measurement (BMW include 75Kgs into their figures that some others don't).

On one side was the times produced by the simulator and on the other side the quickest real time achieved by testers.

This way everything would be left bare for everyone to see, if a car didn't match up to the simulations then we would know that they weren't either making the power quoted, weighed more than quoted or maybe a bit of both.

What do you guys think.

What about the C63?

As far as Evos go, you definitely have to launch it if you have any chance of beating an M3 or 335i. The mad turbo lag without a clutch dump means pretty much any car will get ahead of the Evo off the line, and stay ahead up to 3/4 of the way through the intersection, the Evo will only catch up and pass once you've crossed the intersection.

But this is just my real-world experience, which withers next to swamp's mathematical mastery.

Not a bad idea I absolutely like to use simulation for some hints or maybe even solid answers about some of these types of questions... but... This goes right back to the at the hp at the crank vs. at the wheels and the whole dyno discussion. You have to absolutely nail the power losses to get the simulation to match a perfectly "typical" run and one set of losses does not work for all cars. For such an exerciese you really need a lot, some of which we have but much of which we don't. You need:
  • A lot of good empirical data (like the performance "database" we have collected on this forum).
  • An idea of weather/altitude/temp conditions for each run (which we don't have).
  • Some decent estimate of drive train and electrical losses, which again we don't have (CarTest has some defaults and in general they are OK but they are not perfect).

Perhaps some of these dynos that claim to be able to measure losses by letting the drive train spin down would help, but I have seen no validation of the technique at all.

When you eyed the M3 driver, did he look back at you like this?

The M3 in the first simulation was running up against some elite company. On the second list, hopefully we find out what the M3 can beat.

LOL, and how do you run someone into the curb when you are between the car you intend to "run" and the curb....

unless you ran them into the curb of the left side of the roadway, also pushing them into opposing traffic... that would be pretty intense

Fine let me elaborate. Id have run you ass off the road.

By first running into the curb? I realize that higher order thinking may require visualization, in front of you is a curb, you lane is ending. On your left is an open lane, with a Space Grey 335xi at your door.

Isn't it great to talk tough on the internet. You are VERY cool.

congratulations - you won the lane contest but really lost since the guy is still driving an m3. Why not be a gentlemen and let him in, or would that wound your ego?

It is just a 2 car garage.....and the 335xi is in one of the spots, the other car may be just a mini-van. You are cool though with your M3 because it is the fastest car on the planet.
